why is that, cos its deeply offensive? seems im not the only one who considers it to be slightly racist (admittedly there's a lot worse) Video nasty: Prince Harry faces racism inquiry over footage of 'Paki' remark | UK news | The Guardian
As I said it isn't a term I would personally use because it would be disrespectful. The whole issue of taking offensive seems to be growing arms and legs (I hope that phrase isn't offensive to those unfortunate people missing a limb) and it is being used to score points or assume the moral high ground all too often. People need to be thicker skinned IMHO.
It’s a negative stereotype. Not the worst one (around about the same sort of level as chutney ferret id wager) but a negative stereotype all the same. You can’t sit here putting the world to rights if your own world is a bit on the ignorant side. I’d suggest that’s where a lot of all this started tbh. Ignorance. Ask yourself this, would you go up to someone at your work and call them a raghead? If the answers no which I sincerely hope it is, then why say it at all? (and its not about being "thick skinned" in this instance, for me at least) Not all muslims wear turbans either so technically not only is that word ignorant, but factually incorrect too. If you want to sound like a modern day alf garnett crack on by all means, just expect you'll get the odd raised eyebrow or barbed retort.
As I said it isn't a term I would use. So let me tell you this, if someone applied a "negative stereotype" to me I wouldn't think "RACIST" I would think "ARSEHOLE". I am comfortable enough in who I am to be able to say that.
That’s because (im assuming) youve never either been racially abused or subject to racial prejudice over a number of centuries (and longer in some cases). You are in a position of privelidge as a white person in that respect, the same as me and subsequently unlikely to take a racist term as offensively. Surely you must be able to see that? What are the words they used to describe us that you were referring to earlier?
Since when did 'raghead' refer to someone that wore a turban? I always thought it referred to those that wore tea towels..........
As in the quaran? Not sure half of us even know it exists or what it means do we? Genuine question. All im trying to say is (i think), if your fore fathers had been enslaved, beaten, raped, tortured, and then their children and their childrens children were still getting abused physically or verbally, theyre probably going to be slightly more upset than someone who’s ancestors and subsequent families since have never suffered anything like it, unless you think they should just take it on the chin and be a bit more “thick skinned”. We always make it about us and what we should be able to say/do and it’s not, in any way shape or form and until we start realising that, these types of atrocities and barriers between different groups of people will only get wider and much, much worse. We need to live together, religious nuts, religious people, atehiests etc.... none of us are going away so have some respect. (going slightly off topic here perhaps, so apologies for that)
Are you referring to me as white ! I am outraged. No actually I am not, outraged that is, I am white though. I do understand where you are coming from Red899 and I would not defend "racism", even though I would defend the right to "give offence", although it is something I try to avoid. Adopting the role of "victim" is not helpful to anyone (I am not referring to you here). I am not going to open a can of worms by quoting words that "they" may use to describe "us".
Some sort of stereotyping about members of this forum going on here. Not saying you are right or wrong although I have met people from this site who are not white middle class . Cor blimey guvnor, there are even women and people from North of Watford here FFS ! I have had the misfortune to go to Pakistan on business and I am sorry to say that had I chosen to wonder around in public unescorted I would have received very much worse treatment than a few insults. I`m with @johnv on this topic. Get a thick skin. Insults don't hurt unless you let them, getting a good kicking does.
Slavery was never just a white on black crime. It is estimated that over 1 million men women and children from the British Isles were sold into slavery by Barbary Pirates. Now that is just a crazy idea
I hope this doesn't turn in to a willy waving thread of who can be the most politically correct. People are insulted far to easily these days. Need to grow a back bone and realise that life isn't all Rosy sometimes.
I'm actually sick to death of people that want to play the race card at any opportunity that they can manufacture...........most of the time they can't tell the difference between race and religion. But if that's the way they want to live their lives, that's their prerogative.........However, they sure are going to be complaining a helluva lot in the very near future.
