A Cautionary Tale ...

  1. I used to work in an office where there was a public counter where "customers" used to walk in and ask for help.

No one liked to work the public desk. Everyone hated it. No one would volunteer to work it. Oh wait, there was one exception ... Jenny. Jenny liked to work the public desk and would always volunteer.

Eventually, the idea percolated through thick skulls and Jenny became the full time public desk person. Everyone happy!

No, everyone unhappy. They constantly sniped at Jenny's work, complained about it, bitched about her. This carried on until the management decided to take Jenny off the public desk, and re-institute the rota for everyone taking a turn.

Well, the grumbling reached fever pitch after that - no one was happy with the rota, and asked why Jenny cannot do it full-time.

At this point I printed up some posters and distributed them around the office:

    Chiropodist Required

Must Be Experienced with Gunshot Wounds
    Just sayin'

Beer goggles would not have been enough, I'm not sure cocaine goggles would have, either.

  14. It is said that there are two kinds of soldiers, the ones who march towards the sound of gunfire and the kind who march the other way. There are two kinds of employees, the ones who shoulder jobs and the kind who skive off them. And there are two kinds of managers, the ones who solve problems and the kind who cause them.
