Every year its the same. I set out with the best of intentions then the festive demon casts its evil spell and I find I've bought the MCN Christmas special. The weekly rag is bad enough but £2.99 for the usual bilge supplemented by a bike-themed version of the Dandy is outrageous. As if there wasn't enough garbage to waste your money on during the festering season. And to add insult to injury the local Morrisons has stopped selling Pataks Phall curry sauce. Bastards. I had to make do with poxy, piggin woolly woofta Vindaloo. A few Birdeye chillies and a whole Scottish Bonnet offset the insipidness to a limited extent but its still for girls. Bah humbug. :Rage::Rage::Rage::Rage::Rage::Rage::Rage::Rage::Rage::Rage:
Tesco stock the Phal ones - got some a few weeks ago at £0.90 a jar - stock up when they have promotions :Cigar:
Make your own! I would never eat that factory made shit in a jar!!! Once you've invested in your spices from local cash n curry the only other expense is a pestle n mortar. You will notice the difference immediately
I get my proper ones from a proper Bengali chef actually, he uses Naga Chillies, saves the fuss. Pataks are a quick spur of the moment snack a bit like some have a pot noodle. Horses for courses
Made my own Thai green curry paste once from fresh. Took about half a day to produce enough for two curries. Taste was astounding. Never had a ready made paste that came anywhere close. I'm not as clued up on Indian spices though so I take the easy option. I fried a whole Naga chilli once that a mate had grown in his greenhouse. I had to evacuate the kitchen. It was like a mustard gas attack.
Ive got a subscription to MCN. Regret it every Wednesday. Jar sauce... Yuk. Ill venture as far as paste.
One of the best curries I make is with tinned mackeral. I was given the recipe from an colleague whose partner is from India. And yes, it has a pataks sauce.
Strangest thread I`ve ever seen. A (justified) rant about MCN that turns into a discussion on curries. If its any consolation, down here we cant get either MCN or any curry sauces. And there are NO Indian restaurants to boot. Think yourself lucky Gimlet.
Hahaha - have you ever been in prison??? Tinned fish in tomato sauce with super noodles is all that keeps you alive!
My fault. I came back from an unsatisfactory shopping trip with an MNC Christmas comic I didn't want and without the curry sauce which I did. I suppose the thing to do is make my own Phal sauce, cut the MCN up into squares and put that in the fridge. But a thread about curry is never a bad thing. Feel free to contribute recipes.
