Anyone changes their stock settings? They seem a little firm to me for Sunday blast riding.. I weigh about 13st and wondering if any if you chaps have changed your settings and what you went for.
I'm thinking the same thing. Front seems to be right on the limit of being under sprung and the rear is oversprung for my weight which is basically the same as yours. Haven't had a chance to fiddle yet but I don't think that with preload it's really something that you can pass on, you just need to do it by looking at the sag of your own bike. Damping seems to be fine on mine at the minute, might change when I play with the preload though... The rear really doesn't inspire much confidence on a country road when you start leaning it over though I don't find. Might need to play with pressures as well though.
I have had a play and arrived at settings that are decent for me. Still a bit lacking coming from my 675R but good none the less. My shock is going to MCT Suspension to get the revalve thing done. Costs around £200. Basically the shims in the cylinder are too wide and don't allow the oil to flow freely and thats why the shock acts the way it does. They were full of praise for the front saying its fantastic which i agree with. In the meantime i have the standard settings in with compression out one whole turn on the front and compression all the way out on the rear. Rear rebound is in 2 clicks from standard.
I just lowered the tyre pressures at lunch and that actually helped a fair bit. Down from about 38psi front and rear to more like 32 rear and 34 front. Thankfully the rear seems to hook up a bit better rather than feeling like it's sliding all the time.
Sure, everyone is different and since you've played with your suspension maybe that has helped whereas mine is still as it came from new?
I thought the tyre pressures were 32psi front and rear which is what mine are and what I have just been out and done 120 miles on, just looked in the manual after reading this post and they are meant to be 2.5 bar, 36 psi. Wonder if blowing my tyres up helps anything at all !!!
I imagine you'll notice the difference, whether it helps or hinders is down to personal preference I guess!
It will certainly feel slightly more nimble that's for sure. Mine felt a bit sluggish yesterday and the front was at 33 with the ambient temperature drop.
Where is the measurement for the rear spring from and to? It states 17mm for comfort setting but I want to make sure that I'm measuring the right distance...
the man who has done exhaustive (particularly rear) suspension changing/testing on his Pani (but hasn't been on the site since January) is @ChamMTB and i'm sure would be happy to reveal his conclusions time permitting.
Just found this thread, I weigh just under 14 stone and want to get the basics right before playing with the suspension. My question is the same as above really, where do you measure the 17mm.....most say its the measurement of the amount of thread exposed at the top of the rear shock, but is that from the second lockring when its locked back to the one by the spring, or the thread from the first lockring to the top of exposed thread ?
Just echoing the above. I found the stock tyre pressure much to hard for summer road rides. I went down to about 34/34 iirc. Kept it simple, but found it much better.
So, the stock tyre pressure accounts for the occasional pillion use so it is a bit hard, however a word of caution is that this is not the answer to suspension being set up harshly as you will just destroy tyres if u run the tyres on low pressure. Sounds like high 30's is the general feeling, which I'm sure is okay but wouldn't go lower than 36psi for the road in a rear tyre personally. Before anyone mentions tyres designed to run at low pressure (Dunlop ntec) this is for track only and not on the road.
I was speaking more for feel and grip than suspension, despite this being a suspension thread. Isn't standard something like 38? iirc..
Just starting to look at suspension for the 899. I do have a feeling that the suspension will be too stiff for someone who will be 10st in full gear. Interested to see what people are doing and how they are resolving their own respective issues.
Definitely! The rear Spring is a 8kg which I am told is okay for me at 14st with no pillion. However he rear shock has a design flaw which means oil doesn't flow correctly and it 'locks out'. Mine is packaged up and being sent to MCT today who are rebuilding it and guarantee me that the difference will blow my mind, it will remove the 'vagueness' from the rear and make it feel really plush. Basically, don't bother to start changing springs until u look into sorting this out, as you will never get a nice feel if it's locking out, regardless of Spring.
Thanks for the info. Need to find someone in Yorkshire who knows their stuff so if anyone can recommend anyone that would be a good start.
