Anyone on here had custom ear plugs made, if so are they worth the money and are they that much better than the soft ones I now use. It may be a little of closing the door after the horse has bolted, but I've recently started suffering with tinnitus in my left ear and I don't want it to get any worse.
I'm having the exact same issue. I wonder why the left too. I was going to try another helmet that I have too. The wax ones are quite good but they take a little more time to warm and work in.
Auritech - Intelligent Hearing Protection I got these at the NEC show, for my 899, very good at cancelling out the drone but I can still here to have a conversation
Yes. Much much better than the foam ones and those plastic ones with the little tail on. Don't hesitate.
Should also have mentioned that I got the custom fit version £100, expensive but worth it, even more so if you have on set of tinnitus, heard a radio interview in the week with Tony Blackburn who's had a "kettle boiling" in his ears for 15 yrs!!
I'm interested in this too. What are those plugs like with Sena-style communicators? Can you still have a conversation and listen to quiet music while drowning out the road and wind noise? Or is that a daft question.
Having worked in noisy factories all my adult life (45y), I have become aware that my hearing has suffered a bit. I used the foam plugs for a while when riding, then bit the bullet and got some custom moulded ones from Boots. They're brilliant. Much better than the foam ones for all day use. Unfortunately they're about £120 the pair. I'd do it again in a heartbeat though.
Thoroughly recommend particularly for touring and long days riding, feels reall uncomfortable now if I ever forget them,a must buy for me
I've had a pair of UltimateEars custom plugs for the past year, and I'd never go back to regular plugs now. I paid extra to have the ones with speakers in them. I've got an Interphone F5 and the sound quality in the speakers was shite. Above 40 and couldn't hear anything. I bought the Interphone connector so I could still use the system but with the sound going through the plugs. Oh man! I can't tell you just how feckin good it is now. TBH I rarely connect to the F5 and just connect straight to the phone. Job done. I've had people say to me that surely listening to music is dangerous, because you can't hear anything. I can still hear the engine, sirens, and BMW drivers playing with their new toy horns - but ALL the wind noise has gone. My argument is that surely constant wind noise is more distracting than listening to a bit of music? The only thing I'd say is that you need to get them fitted. There are some places you can go to but you pay for this service. You may be better to wait until the next NEC show. Free fitting and cheaper prices. Oh! I had a quick go with std plugs the other day - just to see. Shocking how much wind noise there is with them. They're better than nothing, but still...
I've got the Auritech custom fit ones and they are worth every penny. They are filtered to cut out all the noise you don't want but let you hear your Sena clear as day. Being custom fit they are very comfortable as well
+1 Ultimate ears. Definitely makes a big difference so don't put it off. Wish I'd always worn them as I also have had tinitus for a few years now and it's annoying, especially when you're in a crowd and can't follow the conversation.
One thing to consider - in ear speakers are illegal in France, and probably other countries. Whether they will be here is anybodies guess. A lot of safety legislation in France, especially in relation to motorbikes is pure nonsense and has no basis whatsover, but I believe that this might be one of the very few that I omakes sense.
i got a pair of made to measure ultimate ear plugs made, and if i'm honest they do not block out any more wind noise than a properly inserted foam plug, guess thats why the racers still wear foam ones
Good point there, i see so many who have the faomies hanging out of their ears and complaining that they dont block much sound. I roll mine and put them in properly and they block out loads of wind noise. I bought a box of maxlite earplugs online for about £25 and it lasted 2 years... Trying to decide whether to get another box or go custom moulded.
Custom earplugs are a waste of time, imho. 1) Your ear canals change shape slightly every 2(ish) years, so good fit now won't be a good fit later. 2) If you lose them (easily done), you've lost a lot of money. 3) They generally don't give anywhere near as much noise protection as a good set of well-fitted foam plugs. Compare the SNR ratings and you'll see. 4) They are awkward to put in. Max-Lites all the way for me (20p a pair when bought in bulk).
i was over £100 for the custom ones they are certainly handier and just need a rinse after wearing them, because of the price i tried to convince myself they were quieter ..if anything i think the foam ones are quieter,my mate has the same ones but he paid more for the ones with speakers so he could listen to music but that only blocks out the wind noise and replaces it with music! i didn't get them because i know i would loose concentration (not a good idea singing and tapping you feet on a bike) i'm going to look into the Auritech ones and see how they compare with Ultimate ear
The bit that worries me is that repeatedly poking things into your ears might cause more damage and introduce more infections than not using plugs. Manufacturers of cotton buds (QTips) specifically warn you not to poke them (or anything else) into your ear canals. And if you must poke things in there, at least use a fresh sterile item each time, not keep on using the old ones repeatedly. Doesn't any manufacturer produce electronic noise-cancelling headphones designed for use in bike helmets?
It only takes 5 mins of sustained wind noise inside your helmet at 30mph, per day, before your hearing starts being damaged (albeit slowly), according to a hearing specialist I know, so some sort of earplug seems the least risky option if you don't want your hearing to deteriorate.
+ 1 for Ultimate. Had them several years now, and wouldn't go back to ordinary. I've got a pair of the 'regular' ones, plus the speaker ones and a pair of sleeping ones. great bits of kit.
