  1. And thereby encourage other members to do the same and cooperate with one another as grown up nation states and not through the sclerotic institutions of the EU.

  2. On the contrary, thats exactly the reason we should leave while we have this golden opportunity.

We're definitely not too far in....yet

But thats what the aim is, for us all to become even further connected, not less so and as such it will be very hard to get out in another 10 years

As you've said , we don't want the euro , so whats the point in bothering getting further in bed with every other nation that has it as a currency?

Its of no benefit to us at all, we're just as open to currency fluctuations buying from Europe as we are from the USA, sometimes we win, sometimes we lose.
Thats never changed but its given us the opportunity to sort out our own mess without being dragged down by others making frankly shit decisions. Their country, their choice and i respect that

None of it makes sense anymore, when this whole thing started in the 70's the world was a much bigger place and being connected with the closer nations made sense (i guess) in some way.

Now look how small the world is since we joined the EU, video conferencing, the internet, low cost air fares and so on.

All of which have helped the world shape itself to become closer overall and easier to do business with each other regardless of being part of a 'fee paying' members club.

Its simply not necessary to try and run Britain the same of every other European country, again as we don't even share the same currency we'll always have an alternative agenda anyway.

I just struggle with what the plus points are.

Its fine saying the EU implemented this legislation, and that legislation..... But its a moot point because its not as though the UK wouldn't have implemented a whole range of other bits of legislation that could/would benefit its people more directly.
The key difference being that we wouldn't have to go 'cap in hand' to some people sat in Belgium to ask if it was ok.

The facts are we are simply not all the same countries, thats a good thing as its more interesting that way.

  3. finm, would you say that you'd rather Scotland remain part of the EU, not necessarily Britain as it is now, but just Scotland ?

So with that would you say if given another referendum would you vote to become independent?

  4. cant imagine a time when i believe Scotland wouldn't be better out of Westminster control. i was interested in the arguments made on Newsinght (30/1/16) the hypocrisy was staggering) but no time to expand. been fullbore here since the new year. but i might expand later tonight once i have me thinking cap on. :smileys:

  5. If we do not leave the next treaty bringing about ever closer economic and political integration will almost inevitably require all members to adopt the Euro and sovereignty will be lost forever. Gentleman's agreements will count for nothing.

I do not want to be part of that.

  6. It is being reported that according to the European Commission and Jean-Claude Junker the sex attacks in Cologne on New Year's Eve were public order issues and had nothing to do with the migrant crisis :Wideyed:

The naked emperor is burying his head in the sand methinks.

  7. He would say that wouldn't he, he's trying to keep the whole thing knitted together.

I doubt that the majority of the German public feel the same as him.

That said Merkel made a Catastrophic error with her open door policy, the worse is probably yet to come unless they start deporting 10000's and quickly. It won't take long for the far right to gain traction and thats a pity but highly likely

Yet another reason I wish nothing more to do with the lot of them when it comes to how Britain is ran.

  8. More evidence that the EU does not help British business or safeguard employment as the IN camp continue to chant. Outside of the EU we could have rapidly followed the USA lead by imposing 60% tariffs instead of the rather late 9-13% tariffs. Already over 5,000 manufacturing jobs lost and areas economically devastated for decades.
Britain's steel industry slams Europe's toothless fightback against China
The European Commission has imposed tariffs on some Chinese imports but British Steel claims the measures are a "slap in the face" for UK manufacturers:
Britain's steel industry slams Europe's toothless fightback against China - Telegraph

Britain's steelmakers claim that these rules do not go far enough to tackle the issue, and claim that Europe lags far behind the US in its efforts to protect domestic industry.
“The Commission’s highly thorough investigation of Chinese exports has highlighted dumping margins in excess of a whopping 60pc," Mr Stace said.
"Given that the European Commission always imposes the minimum duties possible, unlike the US, then what we end up with are duties that are totally inadequate and may not have any material effect.
“If this was the US, we would have seen duties set at 66pc and brought in after 45 days from the start of the investigation. Not 9pc after almost a year, from a drawn out and procrastinating EU machine."

  9. Apparently a top (German?) psychologist has assessed that Merkel is a 'typical narcissistic over-achiever, heading for a breakdown'

I guess that is code for she is going to play the 'standing down owing to illness card' in the near future......

  10. I'm struggling to think of an instance where Ms Merkel has over-achieved.

  11. Until recently, she was an incredibly popular female leader of an important nation.

Wow, are your standards ever high!

  12. That's the problem with the EU (well, one of them, but how long have you got..): leaders whose achievement begins and ends with landing the job, rather than what they do in it.

  13. Um, that isn't an EU thing. That applies to 99.67% of all leaders.

  14. All the more reason then to keep the line of accountability between politicians and electorate as short as possible. And in the same country.

  15. Line of accountawhat?

Oh! You mean democracy! Yes, of course! :Hilarious:

  16. divide and conquer. the same people advocating the bomb because we dont know what threats we will face in the future are proposing we give up our social links with Europe.
who really benefits? anyone on here been refused something because we are in the EU?. what employment and human rights will be affected?
several people on ere have mentioned they import and export all over the world already without any real issues, so whats the problem there?
Elt;s company sells all over the world so would be nice to hear his thoughts.
all this money we send to the EU, (most of which we get back as investment in infrastructure and other projects) you cant ride far up here without seeing a "funded by the EU" sign at the side of the road it will be no different around the rest of the UK and with the prospect of successive tory governments for the foreseeable, how and where do you expect that to be invested?
so who benefits from a broken EU?
Corporations and multi nationals, there will NEVER be any agreement on tax and employment law. it will be a race to the bottom.
national security? trident isnt a first strike weapon. not much use when Russia comes marching in.
I don't believe Russia is as much of a threat as we are told BTW.
will NATO be affected in any way? probably, not directly but competition has a habit of putting up barriers.
Immigration. pretty sure that is the biggest issue possibly the only one. the south east are stressed, do you think it will stop because we are out of the EU? there is a large dollop of doubt on that issue.
corporations, the terrorist and their backers are winning. all us low to middle earners will lose.
    Divide and Conquer. deffo.

  17. No one is proposing we give up our social links with Europe. They are proposing that we stop contracting out our governance to the EU. A vast difference.
