had my DVT about 3 months now, done 1000 miles and just noticed that the paint is corroding off the front cylinder head - that will be a warranty claim back to the dealer then I haven't really used the bike that much, I've had a few 'wet' rides but wouldn't expect that sort of corrosion this early on its in life.
I have read various posts on here about engine corrosion and was wondering if the fitting of a fender extender and Evotech engine guard is the answer. As I presume the problem is small stones being thrown up from the front wheel and damaging the paint finish on the cylinder head which is then resulting in the corrosion. I haven't got my bike yet (due May 16) however I already have these items sitting in a box in my living room waiting to be fitted!
After so few miles this is NOT good. I think Ducati build quality is getting worse not better these days, and customers will start voting with their feet soon.
It's not just Ducati, Bmw have lots of issues with corrosion on engines, buying Japanese will eliminate this problem !! Maybe ..
Yes,but come on D4VE, why on earth would anyone really want to do that? .....:Sour: I mean Japanese I ask you, soul-less or what????? :Bawling:
So my local dealer took some photos to send back to Ducati, but he said not to expect anything!!! Apparently manufacturers don't tend to honour claims against the 'finish' - that's what he said anyway. I pointed out to him that the bike is only a couple of months old with minimal mileage and I wouldn't expect these problems this early in its life. If the bike had 6000 plus miles on it then I wouldn't even have bothered the dealer with it as I'd put it down to wear and tear. I had the longer fender piece fitted at the first service, I don't recall noticing any damage or deteriation then, but it could have been there. I think some stone damage has contributed, hopefully the longer fender will minimise this in future. I've made sure that whole area of the engine/underside is clean and I bought some Scottoil FS365 protectant that gets applied at every wash and keep things protected. If the dealer doesn't sort it I'll probably wait until next winter and remove the rocker cover and get it powder coated! The Evotech engine guard certainly looks like a good option as well. I see that the new MS enduro has a Ducati version fitted, wonder if that's going to be available via Ducati accessories. I'll post up if there's any more progress
I had a hyper with corrosion, the bike had done 1500 miles and ducati's take on the warranty claim was to rattle can the effected casings [emoji33] I find his remark on finish rather poor, BMW are known for replacing engines on brand new GS WC bikes that show signs of corrosion, I've experienced this myself with BMW when a crank case on a rotax engined BMW had corrosion, it was one piece so instead they replaced the whole engine, the bike only had 1 month left on the warranty. Ducati make some lovely bikes but there warranty is sometimes questionable.
I'm not completely sure I'd be happy with that, as the bike will then have a record of having had a replacement engine...
The hypothetical question to ask the Dealer / Ducati is - "Here are two bikes, same age, same condition, same mileages and same spec - identical bikes. One has the paint corroding off the front cylinder head the other doesn't. That is the only difference. What trade-in price would you give for each bike?"
Popped in to my dealers today. They also took photos to send off. He also said 'I wouldn't be happy if that was my bike!'. Let's hope they sort it.
Noticed all the paint bubbling away around and above my oil sight glass yesterday. Don't know wether to strip, sand and paint now to catch it early.
First thing I did when I got my bike was make this cos I just knew that all that cheap metal and paint wouldn't last!!!!!!!
During my winter lay-up, with this thread in mind, I've just purchased and fitted the Evotech engine guard - so thought whilst 'there', I'd fit the supplied semi extension front fender as well. Did it on my 2010 Multi and knew that was a bit of a pain, but despite it stating in the DVT manual that this should ALWAYS be fitted by a dealership, thought what the hell - I'd done it before. Well, after the best part of an hour, a load of cussing, the fender being thrown across the garage.. etc, I gave up. What the **** is that all about !! They couldn't have made it more fiddly / difficult if they tried !!! Is it me ?? Anyone else fitted it ok ? Not gonna take it back to the dealer just for that, so as I not 'due' for anything at the dealership, will probably just run without it. Sod it !! Nick
So what's new? See here for my experience. People on here shouldn't get their hopes up for decent after-sales service. It'll only change if people stop putting up with it.
I couldn't be happier with my dealers so far (hysides). It's a shame I've had so many faults, but they've been sorted quickly every time.
Hysides are a great dealer. I'm over in East Sussex now but being as my warranty has expired at P&H I am now free to go back to Hysides... and I will.
