Bike Won't Start

  1. got a 2004 ducati monster 1000sie. The cam belt broke had both cylinder heads valves and guides etc were replaced. Now have the engine back together. It won't start when pressing the start button in all it does is start clicking at the starter relay located next to the battery. However if you remove the relay it will crank over. Any ideas on how to get it started?

  6. Sounds like in the time taken for the engine to be repaired the battery's lost some of its oomph... either charge it fully and test to see it is holding max charge, or borrow a battery known to be in good nick so as to check whether that's the answer

  7. Tried the battery thing still no go

  8. Have you checked the plugs are sparking and that you're getting fuel?

  9. If the plugs aren't sparking what would I need to look at?

  11. could be many things as usual but if you have done all routine checks plus you have a spark/engine churning fast enough then I would look at temperature sensor (552.4.013.1A) I think it is on your front head. If you remove plug and it shows signs of corrosion then a thorough clean of contacts might do it, alternatively a new one might be the answer.

  12. First off. Does the fuel pump run for a few seconds at ignition on?

  13. Yes it does

  14. OK. That tells us the fuel pump relay is OK, so there should be power to the fuel pump and coils for the first couple of seconds, but only when the engine is turning after that. When the engine turns, either on the starter or under it's own power the ECU receives a signal from the crank sensor. As long as it gets the signal it will keep the fuel pump relay on. It also uses the crank sensor to determine the timing of the sparks and injectors.
Is it sparking when it is cranked on the starter? if not try turning it over with the plugs out using the back wheel. If still no sparks the crank sensor is the likely suspect.

  15. Are the plugs wet when you take them out, or do they smell of fresh patrol? Is the petrol fresh/new to begin with, or are you using what was in the tank when the bike was laid up for repairs?

As others say it could be many things with a complex engine/ignition system, but always check the simplest, most basic things first - if you have a spark and fuel, then its time to go looking for something else - if you aint got either of those two, sort the one that's missing

  16. Water temperature sensor? I thought the 1000 was air cooled unless it's an S4 model

  17. It is air cooled but uses the same component as an engine temperature sensor, mounted in the horizontal inlet valve cover. I think if the air temp sensor was faulty the engine would at least fire, if not run.

  18. quite right - inclusion of 'water' was erroneous.

  19. if it was during summertime I would agree with you.

  20. A simple test is to unplug it. The ECU will substitute a default value which should allow the bike to run, albeit quite badly.
