1098 Air Filter, Which One?

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by timberwolf, Feb 18, 2016.

  1. I am looking to replace my OE air filter on my 1098. I have Zard end cans if this has any bearing on which one to go for.
I was simply going to purchase a K&N item as I have a large bottle of filter cleaner left over from my previous GSXR K&N filter. I read the OE item and others do not seal adequately at the ends and foam cut outs are a good idea to stop the dust/dirt ingress.
Anyone recommend an aftermarket air filter? Any advice?

  2. MWR AIRFILTERS

I like the look of these from a sealing point of view. I'm going to have a pair for the 1098R track toy.

  3. Not relevant to the 1098, and they only seem to offer air filters for a few Ducati models, but the quality of these looks OK to me where a simple lower-cost OEM replacement is required. They claim to improve flow, but I doubt it makes a big difference.

Hiflofiltro Premium Filters I've bought one for a Suzuki before. From WeMoto I think.

  4. The problem with standard filters is that it does not seal well, letting in crap, check inside your air box, I'm going for the 2 piece MWR to stop this issue

  5. Yeah the MWR 2 piece appears a good idea but damn they are pricey.

  6. I only heard of this issue relating to "poor sealing" on 848/1*98 series air filters last night from @Chris , now it appears to have gone viral!
Is it a "real" issue....has it just come to light and people are reacting to it (like Russian bombers...??)....
Do I really need to spend MORE money on my bike??

  7. MWR Ducati Air Filters

    £79.99

  8. Yeah, thats what I meant Ricky! Plus the MWR fluid.

The sealing issue has been an issue from day one ricky. The air boxes get really dusty inside. Some use the adhesive door draught excluder stuff on the ends of the air filter.

  9. Since I first bought my bike I've never been convinced the airfilter element is a sealed fit. It might be but it just feels a bit 'wooden' when I re fit the air tubes. Those sock things however, that you fit either side of the airbox, look a bit more convincing. A better design.
Next time you have your bike apart have a good butchers in the airbox. There may well be a smear of oil (from the mist) but absolutely nowt else, it must be spotless. If it isn't I'd be thinking down the lines of filter integrity. See what I did there?

  11. Thanks R - saw it last night and wondered if ESP was at work. There is already a thread on here on this subject which I think includes a link to a 'Brad the Biker Boy' article. I think an aftermarket filter was recommended with superior sealing on each end, will try and find the link.

  12. Thanks Chris, in the comments on the article you posted, is the poster saying the K&N are a better fit?

  13. I've fitted a few K&N. Work well and come with seals to tighten up the gap in the air tubes..

  14. I couldn't find the original article which included Brad's notes but I think several were saying that the K&N is the one that fits well just as Neil has said.

  15. Thanks for the info chaps. I think I will go for the K&N, they are not cheap @£50 ish but I believe the paper OE are not far behind.
Just found this picture, as Nelly says, extra rubber gaskets included for the 848/1*98 models.

  16. I recently fitted the K&N, its a much better fit than oem (the inside of my airbox was full of grit). As well as the foam inserts, they also supply a tube of sealing grease.

  17. Do you have a link where to buy the K&N filter?
Anybody know how it compares to the MWR ones?

  18. Not yet ricky, I had a quick look yesterday to see who sells them cheapest. When I find where I will let you know.
