Hi guys,my S4R 2005 has no contact to the starter solenoid,i check everythin exept the DIODE,i cant seem to locat it(i dont want to cut open the hole luum, enywone knows where i can find it on my bike?
The diode is across located in the plug to the starter solenoid, across the 2 terminals. It's function is to quench the back EMF produced when the solenoid is released to protect the ECU. It will NOT prevent the solenoid from operating. The solenoid connector has 2 wires, red/green and red/black. The red/green should be at 12V with the ignition on. The solenoid will operate when the ECU supplies a ground to the red/black wire. This will only happen when the starter button is pressed AND the bike is in neutral OR the clutch lever is pulled AND the stand is up. Check the operation of the stand and clutch switches. The stand switch is the most likely culprit.
+1 on stand switch. I would also check contacts on the actual starter button on RHS switchgear. There is a 6 or 7 pin connector associated with this switchgear and 2 contacts should show continuity once you depress starter switch. This was faulty on mine from water ingress. If you want still check diode on starter, locate it as per @Derek suggestion. Please note that the diode is just a EMF spike protection and if it becomes faulty does not prevent you from starting. However the specs are 1N4007 (a very common 1A diode, can be substituted with pretty much anything 600V 1A and costs 20 cents) on early models and 1N5408 on later (2A 800V diode). Diode can be tested independently on some multimeters and you should see 0.5V - 0.85V drop on multimeter in one direction and open circuit in other in "diode mode". Please note that diode is paralel with the starter motor coil, so if you test it on the bike connected, you will measure coil resistance as well which is very low.
Thx, i already did that, was ok, i just dont get ground from ecu .... Have to check clutch switch and stand switch
