Clutch is pretty rusty. Sorted the basket with lots of brake cleaner and elbow grease. Brake cleaner and some 60 wet/dry for the steels?
Finish with chain or brake cleaner. I find wet and dry too abrasive and wire wool just goes to mush. Andy.
A Scotchbrite or (Merka) Mirllon pad or similar works very well, I dip mine in petrol to give it some sort of "lubrication" Available in various grades, I use the ultrafine, which is not that fine in actual fact, and gives a nice polished surface with little scuffing as it wears it gets finer so you can juggle bits around if you have a few used ones from other jobs. Also better wear than wet and dry and less material removed.
It should state what the grade is on the pad if it is new. I "think" manufacturers grades do vary by colour from one manufacturer to another. It might be best to check their website to make sure, assuming you know the manufacturer. If not then a test over a clean piece of alloy should give you an idea of how rough it is. My Mirka ones, which I buy in bulk, are brown which makes them ultrafine or at least fine. I use this grade for everything in rough polishing terms and it works for me.
Given the lithium grease mod and the fact that some have converted their dry clutches to semi-wet, I'd be surprised if a spot of oily residue is going to any harm...
