748 Timing Query

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by rob6539, Mar 18, 2016.

  1. Hi guys, just a quick one please?

Whilst I've got the engine out of my 748 I decided to change the belts as well. However, on the horizontal cylinder, the timing mark on the inlet cam pulley doesn't quite pair up to the cylinder head mark like all the others do.

I will upload a pic when I get home, but it really is marginally out, (like a few mil) and looking at the teeth it looks like the cam pulley would never be smack on anyway. Unless I'm not putting enough tension on the belt from the crank pulley up to the cam??

I've cranked the engine by hand and all seems fine.

How accurate are timing marks? Should I start again and really pull the belt tight from the crank to the inlet cam? Or am I being too fussy?

  2. timing marks should be bang on mate.

  3. Cheers mate - I'll have another look over the weekend

  4. Have the head or base gaskets been changed?

  5. I know what your thinking but if that was the case surely both cams would be slightly out.
    Steve

If only one is out perhaps someone has been adjusting the timing with an offset woodruff key.

  6. Thanks guys, all sorted now, just needed a little more effort to pull the belt into place over the inlet pulley. All marks are spot on and belts are tensioned all ready to go.

Thanks for help as ever. Don't know what I'd do without this forum :)

  7. If you're like me you'd end up in a right mess and taking the bike to a mechanic in a pile of bits on a trailer.

  8. What was the tensioning method you used @rob6539 . I'm about to do mine for the first time soon.

  9. Hi mate, sorry for the late reply.
I used a facom tensioning tool, which i managed to pick up cheap some time ago. But i've used all the methods in the past, from belt deflection to a guitar tuner app on a phone. You speak to anyone who changes belts frequently and they all seem to say that most people are too precise, however I'm still of the opinion that I want to get it spot on and not take the risk!

If you'd like, I can post my tension tool to you (if you're happy to pay for postage and return?) My belts are sorted not, so (hopefully) won't need it again for some time.

Message me if you're fancy borrowing?

    Rob
