Hey. 999, MY 03. Removed the coil(?) from the vertical cylinder, had a look down and found this spring on top the plug. Do I need a new coil? Thanks
Try taking a look at the parts diagram to see if there should be a spring in there and how and where it fits. Can't say I remember one though...
There's a rubber cap on the end of the coil. It has come off and will be on the end of the spark plug. You will need to get it out before you can use a spark plug tool.
Ok, so that just pulls/ levers off? So the spring/coil coming out is Ok? On the horizontal the spring came with the plug. These plugs I bought, should the cap unscrew? And then I fit with just the thread. Also, do I need a specific Spark plug spanner as my 996 toolkit does not have one and the 999 has no toolkit?
What make are the plugs you bought and what make the plugs in there are matters as well. OEM plugs have their hexagon the spanner grips on further towards the top of the plug than NGK. For NGK you need a very thin wall plug spanner because the well the plugs sit in tapers towards the bottom, so clearance for NGK plugs is minimal
Are you saying that large black bit you have separated is the cap as that came off, was just the spring left behind.
You need to find a suitable plug spanner It needs to be short enough to use with the tank just propped up and slender enough to reach NGK Flats in the taper. I've an idea Sealey do one. I did attempt to buy one elsewhere but it was too long and it also didn't fit, so I used the oem one and filed it to fit further down the taper.
Laser 4376 Plug Socket 3/8"d 8mm Thin Wall: Amazon.co.uk: Car & Motorbike One something like this perhaps??
It needs to be 16mm. I tried my GSXR one but it has a rubber insert for the top of the plug but for one with the outside bit unscrewed so fits the threaded bit so the spark plug in the 999 will not fit in the rubber bit. I went to the local motorist shop and picked up a thinner 16mm socket but still won't fit. Apparently they have more spark plug tools coming in Tuesday so back down then. Or I may drill out the rubber on the GSXR tool, but I'd rather not.
