749 New Battery Time.

  1. My 749 developed some interesting electrical gremlins yesterday, the headlight would not come on and the rev counter stuck so I reckon the battery is on its way out.

Has anyone used a light lithium battery, do they work well, and are they worth the 2 kg weight loss?

    Bluey.

  2. I bought one for the 848, it has about 3kg weight loss, but that is not what I bought it for. I bought it as an experiment and to see if they were any good. It was fitted in place of a perfectly working standard battery and works fine. It cranks a bit faster than the standard and has never let me down.
I do not have a Lithium charger as I never put any of my bikes on a charger - I don't see the need.
The 3 kg weight saving is about the same as 4 litres of fuel in the tank and as I cannot feel the difference between a full fuel tank and an nearly empty one, it is wasted on me.
Have a look at my blog (below) for pictures and the different weights on some scales.

  3. Ace, thanks.

  4. So if it needs a special charger how does the OE Ducati charging system cope?

  5. Exactly. When they talk about chargers you will find that chargers like Optimate for lead acid batteries have a de-sulphate mode which Lithiums don't like. My bike does not know what type of battery is fitted and so just charges it. I see no need for a garage charger as Lithium batteries hold their charge for much longer that lead acid do.

  6. That's it then. Decision made.

  7. Let us know which brand you get. And how it performs. I'm think of treating the 924 to one.
