Hi All New here so please excuse the basic question. Been away from bikes a few years now (too long), want to get by my 996bp back on the road so just been ordering everything to give it a good service, oil, filters, belts etc... The tyres are not worn out but very old so they are getting replaced too. I'm an all year rider but dont go out in the wet given the choice, I intend doing the odd track day too. So what tyre do you recommend? I have lost touch with the latest technology so need some guidance please. Thanks John
You'll probably end up with a load of different recommendations when it comes to tyres. I'm happy with my Michelin Pilot Power 3's. I think the current tyre in vogue for road riding with the odd track day is the Metzler M7RR and I think I'll be giving them a go when my current set need replacing.
I'm using Pirelli Diablo Rosso 2 on my 916. They work well although not the longest lasting, rear is done in 3k miles front in around 4.5 - 5k. I was using them on my Monster too but the rear gets munched away in under 2k so am trying a harder compound on that...
Hi there, yep tyres are quite personal, consider the bike and it's intended design use it requires a sports tyre, The later technology and reports will correctly move you to Metz M7RR, or Pirelli Rosso 3, review are not quite available for the Rosso3 because it's brand new, the older Rosso corsa is stickier again but has poorer wet ability, all three tyres will cover off track use no problem, with Rosso3 &M7RR expect 1-2k more than Rosso corsa, if fair weather is your thing then your like me which means you probably stiffin up when caught out by a shower, M7RR will give you the confidence in the wet as this was its design purpose, rosso3 has yet to prove itself in this scenario but this is also Pirelli design factor with the product, if mileage comes more into the equation then sports touring is what you need but you will be putting a tyre on that causes slower turn in speed which is against the bikes design, if this is your route then Michelin pilot road 4 will be your preferred choice, me? I say M7RR and enjoy the bike and confidence it will give you Cheers, Andy
I had a look at the M7RR on Wednesday, the rear tyre seemed really "high" in the middle (I expect there is a correct term), is there a risk of it rubbing a swing-arm/hugger?
The "V" profile of the tyre is tall yes but tyres are made to a size which manufacturers have a tolerance to abide by. What model tyre do you run now, roughly what % is left to use and what is the current distance from tall point on tyre to the hugger? To be honest unless it's a real cheap hugger we have never had a tolerance issue with fouling any hugger with these tyres and I've never had a return customer saying he is getting rubbing at high speed (centrifugal force expanding tyre). Take a couple of photo's and PM me I am happy to help @Cream_Revenge, Sorry going off topic, Cheers Andy
Thanks Andy Going to give the M7RR's a try, running a 5.5 rear wheel so will go with a 180/55. Really looking forward to getting back out, its been way to long!
