Starting Issues

  1. Hello again, after a longish absence...

    Monster S4

Battery is new and fully charged.

Solenoid clicks but nothing else happens (starter doesn't turn at all).

Starter turns if I connect it directly to a battery.

It was starting ok until I flattened the battery by repeated cranking and then I jumped it by connecting a fresh battery direct to the starter. Could this have damaged something?

    Ideas?

    Thanks

  2. Fuse gone ? More likely relay ?

  3. Welcome back to the mad house
    Thought it was quiet :)

  4. Normally, I'd suggest corroded or loose battery terminals but the battery direct to the starter motor muddies the waters somewhat. Sounds like the current is reaching the solenoid but no further.
As the solenoid is a giant relay, it seems something between that and the starter motor has gone.
Maybe you have a dodgy connection between the two or you've burned out a cable...

  5. Most likely the solenoid itself, if it clicks there's power going to it. Check the starter cables have clean contacts first.

  6. Does the starter turn if you bridge the solenoid terminals? If it does the problem must lie in the solenoid itself. If not it can only be the cable connections at the battery, solenoid or starter.

  7. Yep. Tried that last night and it fires the starter motor. I didn't think it was the solenoid because it was clicking but bridging the terminals worked, so it must be fkd. It obviously wasn't happy with me jumping the bike off the starter motor terminal.

Annoying, as it's the second solenoid I've had to buy in a fortnight, the other one being for the 900.

Thanks for all the replies though
