Bypassing Side Stand Switch

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Pavey, May 17, 2016.

  1. Is there an easy way (as in by the roadside) to bypass the side stand switch on an 1198?

Mine looks to have caught fire today as I have a whacking great big burn hole right by it in my new cf bellypan.

    Sad face.

As soon as I drive off the engine cuts out, currently waiting for the RAC.

  2. My 1098R was bypassed when i bought it as it had no sidestand.

These were the wires that were joined.

I'd be very surprised if it was the cause of a fire though, it's simply a switch. I'd be inclined to let mr RAC transport the bike home for you for a thourough investigateion.

  3. @Pavey you seem to be having a lot of trouble with your 1198 mate.

  4. Sometimes I do think I am the unluckiest f***er going.

  5. A paperclip or similar will do just fine. I did it by the roadside on my multi and it's the same connector. I then ordered a connector from eBay to do the job properly.

  6. Does the header pipe (which i recently replaced) have a hole in it aside from the one for the O2 sensor? The garage that has my bike rung me today and said there is a hole in the pipe and the hot exhaust gas emitting from it is what burnt through my side stand switch and new cf bellypan. :(

Guess the hole is supposed to have a bolt in it. I must admit i didn't see another, aside from the O2 sensor one. Is there one or is the garage mistaken? If so, does anyone know what bolt goes in it?

  7. That's for the lambda sensor.

  8. Is that the thing that looks a bit like a spark plug, and has a wire coming out of the end of it?

  9. Yes.

Sorry to hear of your woes.

  10. Thanks mate. My own stupid fault.

The garage alluded to the lambda sensor being in place and their being another hole on the pipe, that looks like it receives a nut. Is that correct?

  11. 18mm exhaust bung. Cheap on ebay

  12. IIRC the earlier bikes had one lambda, you may have bought a pipe for a later bike that has two. (couldn't swear to that)
Looks like you just need a lambda blanking plug.

  13. Or an old lambda and snip the wire

  14. They're about £30-35 on eBay (maybe a cheaper one will fit if someone knows details). Alternatively you could ask a dealer or two if they have any broken ones they have replaced (or to keep an eye out).

  15. Thanks gents. The pipe was from a 1098r. Wish I had spotted the extra hole at the time. :(

  17. Got to go to work now but I can look on the standard 1098R pipework that I've got in the loft when I get home if that will help. Andy
