Hi all. Anybody know about Mercedes sprinters on here. I have a 2011 model 516 2.2. When driving and I floor it for a kick down in the gears it looses all power and goes into limp mode. No warning lights come on. Then have no power. You can hear that the turbo is not spinning. Turn the engine off and on and all ok again. Does not happen when dropping from third to second or second to first only the higher gears. Had it checked over by my mechanic today. All hoses ok and tight. No errors on computer when plugged in. According to computer everything ok ie valves, diverters, recirculators etc. There was a historical boost error. As ever, never did it for the mechanic but happened to me on way back from garage. Phoned mechanic back to explain. He thinks that the turbo is not providing enough boost during/after gearbox kick down for it to power the vehicle at higher revs after the down shift and this then enables limp mode. Anyone any ideas. Mechanic thinks it could be the first signs of the turbo going toast. Engine done 80k miles but lots of idling in its life in traffic. Cheers all James
doubt its the turbo. if its variable vain they can stick intermittently. buy some cataclean fire it in the tank and run it through. sticking egr type symptom that can give boost type errors.unless blatantly obvious always change the fuel filter if you have running faults on a diesel
Thanks guys. I personally don't think it's the turbo. No smoke and when not in limp mode you can hear it spooling up nicely. Has only just been serviced. Will get a new fuel filter for it. Thanks again. Will update any progress.
What could be wrong with the actuator. Sticky, broken or just cream crackered. If the actuator is faulty would you hear some air escaping (like a whooshing sound ) when on boost, but not the sound made by the turbo an extra sound.
i had a 2012 clc220 in similar issue last week not measuring boost replaced map sensor and checked wiring no fault found. i could provide vac and boost with a tool i have. no deviation when operating. didnt sort it sent him on his way. he said he would get back to me once merc sort it. i will pass on once i find out.
Hi drinky. All hoses and attachments checked and for any splits. No luck there. I am thinking along the lines of ducaticonvert. Something stuck open abit and leaking boost.
If its done lots of idling, perhaps something is coked up.Perhaps some redex and a damn good thrashing will help.It always does for me.
Boost pipes etc may look ok but it sounds like your getting the problem under load so it wouldn't take much of a leak to cause a problem, I'd suggest pressure testing the intake system to be sure and check the vacuum pipes with a mitivac hand pump. Also worth giving the air filter a look make sure fitment is correct and there's nothing blocking it. If all that checks out then your best bet is to get someone to stick a good scanner on it and do a snapshot of live data when the fault occurs, if you can get it to do it regularly then that should be easy and it should help them pin point the problem. Just be sure to choose someone who knows exactly what they are doing otherwise it could end up costing you a fortune in unnecessary parts! If your certain it's just coked up try carbon clean if there's one in your area as I know a lot of people who have had it done and it's worked wonders for that problem.
Just got an update from my garage. It was the inlet manifold that has failed. Not sure if it has cracked or a connecting bolt/stud broken. They are stripping the engine down now. Just thought I would give you guys who took the time to give help the update. Cheers all.
