Gove won't win. If it comes down to May or Gove, May is a shoo in. If its May/Leadsom there could be a contest. May will invoke article 50, she will enact the referendum result without equivocation and she won't hold a general election before 2020. Andrea Leadsom will do the same.
Leadsom would be my choice but I voted for May as I think she will be the party choice. Whatever happens I hope Leadsom gets a prominent position in the new cabinet. Steve
After Johnson stabs Cameron in the back and Gove stabs Johnson in the back, we are just waiting to see who stabs Gove in the back and when. No need to wonder why.
Nobody* can actually say out loud that Brexit should be postponed indefinitely, at least not at the moment. But on the other hand nobody wants to be the one who actually pushes the UK off the cliff. Ticklish, isn't it? * Except for David Lammy MP, who is brave but indiscreet.
The present crisis is unusual as crises go, in that most often a crisis arises from some external unwanted uncontrollable event (like a military attack, or an economic collapse, or a revelation of wrongdoing). Exceptionally this crisis was wholly under the control of politicians; political figures precipitated uproar deliberately and artificially as a mechanism for advancing their careers. Every problem can be potentially turned into a crisis, and every crisis presents opportunities to the unscrupulous.
Them's the rules: the departing country invokes Article 50 when it's good and ready. Whoever becomes PM I expect they will do the same: get all your ducks in a row and agree the trade deals with countries outside the EU,and then set the wheels in motion. Leaving does not have to take 2 years, but if it takes longer then the EU has to agree unanimously to extend the time. There is no minimum time after Article 50 is invoked,if all agree then 2 weeks might do it. The EU want the UK out of it straight away because (a) their markets are jittery about losing a cash cow/one of their biggest markets for exports, and (b),if UK gets tariff free deals with the rest of the World ,then maybe some other members will think it's worthwhile jumping ship. Only my opinion of course : others are available and equally valid. MG didn't say how long it would take, just that he would do it when he was ready. Exactly what I'd expect from any PM
from a British PM yes. if it don't work for us lets brake it. The EU aint daft. they at least will have a plan. along with mcthatch :Hilarious:
According to the EU, trade deals can't be negotiated until the UK has LEFT the EU......The EU Trade Commissioner looks determined to make the stock markets tumble again. Is she determined to damage both the UK and EU. When it comes to financial rules, the EU are happy to break them as suits the real world conditions. Just look at whats going on to keep the Italian banks afloat right now. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-eu-referendum-36678223

Only the trade deals with the EU can't be negotiated:now the shackles are off,the UK can negotiate with whomever it damn well likes
UK trade talks have come up in the Australian election. The Australian Government has indicated it would like to begin bilateral trade talks with the UK as soon as possible. As have at least 10 other countries. Far from shunning the UK major economies around the world are eager to strike new trade deals with the lucrative UK market without the EU getting in the way. The UK government should slash corporation tax to the lowest rate in Europe and do it as soon as possible. 11 Countries Gearing Up to Strike Trade Deals With Britain | Heat Street
It is possible to admire some of the qualities of Thatcher and Sturgeon but it would be hard to like them. Andrea Leadsom came across as a thoroughly likeable woman, something that she is well known for apparently.
