I went to Colombia a few years ago on business at the expense of a client who wanted me to take a look at some property (I could have done it on a topographical drawing but hey ho if they wanted to pay to fly me out there and stay in 5* hotels then who am I to argue). Anyway the mayor of the town I was visiting gave me and my colleague a team of six armed soldiers, on motorbikes, to follow us around everywhere we went. I have to say it was one of the most disconcerting things I've ever come across. You couldn't even go for a pee without two of them being right behind you brandishing their machine guns! Obviously they were there to protect us being kidnapped by bandits (which was all the rage at the time :confuse but all it did was draw attention to us the whole week we were there.

Just seen this on the lunchtime news. The police rider interviewed said they need these bikes to respond "as fast as possible". They've given them BMW GS800s. You can't do anything as fast as possible on a BMW 800 GS. Economical though, so that's OK.
