748 The Oil Debate.....

  1. I have noticed that with Motul 300V there is always a thick coating on the cams & rockers when I service my bike - consider that I usually service it around February, having not run it since November so still a good coating after 3-4 months standing - that coating must help on cold start ups.

This from having previously used Shell advance where there was noticeably less oil on the moving parts after a long stand - during which time I also had 9 rockers flake! (although I have now had them all refaced by Newman cams so that problem is gone).

As for viscosity I use the 15/50 in the 916 as per recommendations but have been using the 10/40 in the air-cooled Monster as I feel that being thinner, it helps with the cooling due to the barrels being oil cooled and my thinking is a faster flow with a thinner oil takes more heat away quicker - not sure if this thinking is correct though? but even the thinner oil still leaves a good coating on the cams after 3-4 months standing so from that point of view there probably isn't much difference anyway.

  2. Cheers for that Dukedesmo that's reassuring to hear what you can actually see when you do your service after no riding the bike for a few months. I think I'm going give the motol 15w 50 a go not sure if I'd need the 300v is that really just for full on racing? I don't race so perhaps I'd be better off with the 7100 nelly suggests. Great useful info as usual from everyone.

  3. Race oil doesn't have the additives a road engine needs, such as corrosion inhibitors.
    Horses for courses.

  4. Maybe not? but I reckon for my use; warm, dry weather, low mileage, bike stored in warm, dry workshop and oil changed before it has chance to go off then it works for me.

You'll struggle to find any corrosion on any of my bikes...

  5. Anyone moved between rock oil and motul 7100 and noticed any differences good or bad?

  6. You couldn't let it lie......
