  1. 30k aint bad atall for a set of front disks and pads. especially if mostly town driving.
i can by a set of budget pads and disks for around £40+vat and a quality set for around 60-70-+vat
in my experience the big Dealerships are just as bad as Sir tom farmers old operation for (mis) selling
brakes or are they? there is min tolerances listed for all these parts that they can all refer to if push comes to shove but most experienced techs ( i am of the opinion Q,Fit dont employ experienced techs but prefer to "cough" train them in house) will know they will do considerably more mls.
    MOT criteria section 3

brakes are the easiest things in the motor trade to sell to the unknowing, but at 30k for the original set? it might be time to dry yer eyes :Sorry::Hilarious:. personally if it was mine and there was no feed back through the pedal i would throw a set of pads on it and continue to sleep easy. :smileys:

  3. Yip - 30k sounds about right....I replaced the pads and discs all round in our megane a few years back, took all afternoon, easy, but time consuming getting bolts unstuck was the hardest part. Paid a bit more for Brembo's all round, did make a nice pleasant difference. TBH you should be dancing the jig as 2 front discs for a Pani or something like that will cost the same (and probably more) for a full set of discs and pads for your car...

  4. Christ you lot are reasonable today! Where's all the sabre rattling!

  5. fecking robbing basturds. run em till the piston hits the disk
even then you should be good for another hundred mls. jeez what they like eh?

  6. Yeah - sorry about that....in stark contrast ive always found anything for a car inifinitely cheaper than for a bike (or a push bike for that matter!) - a smattering of examples as follows...

    1. Tyre for our Smax - 135 quid (18" wheel) Pirelli NeroZero - will last at least 15k
    2. Tyre for my z1ooo - 180 quid - ill be lucky to see 3k out of it.

    3. Brake pads for my push bike (when I had one) 12 quid - will last about 4 months on the rear.
    4. Brembo sintered pads for the RSV4 - 18 quid - 4k at least (actual time lasted was about 2 years)

    5. Oil for the bikes 50 quid for a 4 litre tub (plus 15 quid for the filter) - 3k before its needed again....
    6. Oil for the car (in fact a service on a 2litre smax is 160 quid-ish) from our local ford dealer) plus I get a years free AA cover thrown in.

Id say the biggest rip off pound for pound was the push bike. The local bike shop I reckon was coining it in...taking in to account the hipsters and office workers that I always saw in there literally throwing their money at the counter - that's the business to be in..!

The phrase that fucking boiled my blood was buying say, a crank bearing for 18 quid thinking "well that wasn't so bad" to be followed up with "yes sir, your gonna need the special tool for that..!" - another 40 quid (or whatever they felt like charging). Fuckers.

Does that qualify for sabre rattling!

  7. Sounds like Ducati.....

  8. production numbers. approx 1.4 gazillion focuses (quite possibly have shared applications) as apposed to how many panashities?

  9. Generic starter relay for the Hyper (60 quid) - bikes are expensive no matter which way you cut it....angle it the push bike way....brake pads are pretty generic....and last fuck all time (theyre about a quarter of the thickness of when I was a kid)

An expensive chain set for a push bike (racer for example - mine was a Trek Madone 2) about 100 quid and id see about 9 months out of it...if you try to cheap skate it.....

    1. Just buy one part of the set ie the chain and the rest of the stuff will just wear it down.
    2. Buy a cheap chain set - it wears out faster.

And on top of all of that if you don't keep it clean then it eventually will wrap itself found the rear changer then you end up having to buy that as well....

All the above has happened to me over 8 years or riding pushbikes to work. At least with the Motorbikes I actually enjoy cleaning and looking after them -I hated every minute of pushbike ownership and I never lost a pound of weight while I did!

    [getting off soapbox now]

  10. Ah, I was enjoying it.....

  11. I'm getting old.... I could moan all day.... Just grabbed a pool car from the car park.... Every time I find a fucking spare one it's running on vapor...

  12. I've done 100k plus in several cars. ( I cover this mileage easily in 2-3 years ) The Mondeo I had had new discs and a steering rack at about 60k from memory. The VW's I've had have all been shit. Several faults and many reaccuring. The only car apart from servicing and one headlight bulb that needed nothing in 113k miles was a Citroen C4 (2011 onwards shape) brilliant car.
The Leon's I've had since have been great too though one lost its battle after a combined speed of 100mph head on crash. That car simply saved my life. It took the impact incredibly well and better than the VW Tuareg that hit me.
I'll let you know about the Skoda Octavia VRS I have in about 2 years time ;)

But I've seen it before where cars are advised for this and that. My brother is a very strict MOT tester himself and has looked at some issues I've showed him and they are just that. An advisory.

Discs need replacing at less than 50k? I bet not. All discs lip and the lips all rust. But still do the job they are intended for.

  13. Yes just get some pattern discs and pads

Crazy how you can buy front pads for a car for £15 yet pads for the Pani are £50+!

  14. Not exactly comparing apples with apples though.... For a half decent sports car, Brembo disks will be £250+ and pads will be £100+..... The last set of front disks/pads I bought for a car were over £700....

  15. Fair point, Im just thinking last set I bought from Euro car parts for Mini were £65 for a full set of discs and pads !!

  16. find a bike that is as slow as the mini and I'm sure the brakes will be just as cheap ;)

  17. My Modus is on it's one and only replacement Discs and Pads @ 160,000 miles and still going strong at an average of 73mpg, but did I mention I have just retired it and bought a van :)
My Exige is well into it's second set @ 21,000 miles :D
