I think you should give them a call first and hear what they say. They know far more than I do I'm really not that clued up compared to a proper mechanic or others on here. I'm not doubting them as they have a good reputation but it does seem odd. You could call Geoff and ask for his opinions too. My service was £789 Inc VAT but I also had oil, filter, air filters, fuel filter, coolant, belts and the 2 rockers replaced I bought from off here.
Yeah think I will give them a call and see what I can find out, totally agree it seems odd as there were the flakes found in pic when I drained from sump plug then approx the same again (maybe a few less) when I removed strainer. Gota be something failing if chrome is found and it's definitely chrome not metal bits, so with that in mind has to be rockers I think? I know it had one replaced at the 6k service (which incidentally was carried out at Geoff Barnes) only reason I didn't go back there was distance from where I live and many had said St.Neots was good.
Good luck, understand your thoughts on this totally. Its hard to know what to do for the best at times. Especially when you have enough knowledge to know something is amiss but not enough to sort it yourself.
I suppose it's possible that the flaking has happened in the 270 miles I've done since they did the top end service
I'm reading this with great interest. I've just brought my 748 and will be doing full service myself. I can't see any history of rockers being replaced on mine, but there is records of regular oil changes. I'm guessing I'll also need to replace some. Does anyone know how long it takes Newmans to repair the rockers and is it more cost effective to send them the whole set and have them done in one go?
Last I saw on here was about 4-6 weeks I believe. I think some rockers are more prone to failure than others so while all would be ideal probably not required.
Newman used to give a discount per rocker if you had a full set done of about £5 each but this may have changed as that was a while ago.
I had mine done some years ago and IIRC the price was around £40 each or £35 for 8 or more. They turned mine around in about a week.
I just called Newmans. They have a fixed price of £37.50 + Vat each and no discount for having lots done. Turnaround in 7-14 days. So that's £720 inc vat to do the whole lot. Then they will need shimming again, so it's not cheap, but may help any resale later.
I'd just do what you need to. Run Motul 15w50 oil and service in winter so if you do need to post them off your not off the road when sun is out.
Interesting, and for myself, I think a fair price compared to what each new rocker was\is costing. You would need to be keeping the bike or engine I feel.
I'm keeping the bike definitely, just spoken to the garage and they want me to take the flakes in to show them so I'm going in the morning. Reckon I'll go down the Newman road if it comes to that. I have just put 15w 50 in her (Motul) at this service.
Actually I only did the openers as I've not had a closer flake despite having had 9 openers do it. So that halves the price, also simplifies fitting because changing the closers is not so easy with the heads on, especially the rear cylinder exhaust valves. That said I took the opportunity of changing the valve guides and piston rings etc. along with the bores replating at the same time.
Just wondering, I never really use the fast idle button as my duke starts first time and ticks over fine, should I be using this button for a faster idle? Surely the slower the parts are moving the less damage is likely?
I haven't used mine on any of my three bikes and unless it's set up correctly it often doesn't work as it should anyway. I always start mine and let it idle on fully closed throttle until it has warmed to about 40c and then I ride off.
As Red998 says, most are not adjusted correctly so don't make any difference, I do use mine though, since I put the 853 engine in I find it needs a faster idle for the first minute or so. Steve I can't see there's anything to worry about it idling a little faster, how many people blip the throttle upon start up without realising they do it? that's the time any damage is done.
The fast button on mine works a treat, but I always get the oil pressure light out before using it, and then always bring the revs down to about 1250/1100 after it starts
