748 That Front Tyre Thing

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by RC1, Aug 18, 2016.

  1. I have an 02 r and I think like other 748 it left the factory with a 120/60 but it's about to be re shod with a 120/70 when it goes to baines racing sat.

If I'm doing it properly what other parameters need to be adjusted to account for a non standard rolling circumference

    - speedo
    - ride height
    - front fork compression and rebound

Am I over analysing it or did the bike leave factory with a 120/70 (I don't have my owners manual on me and the curiosity is killing me)

  2. I think you are over thinking it a touch mate, with respect. My mates 748r has a 120/70 and it's perfect, my 748 also ran 120/70, any very very marginal compromise in terms of ride height or speedo will be worth it.

Having said that I did notice he always seems to be at 31/32mph when I'm at 30 but tbh it's far more likely to just be a worn speedo drive

  3. Having not ridden your new bike for long, you are unlikely to notice any difference except the turn in which may be a tad slower. You do not need to change anything else. Andy

  4. Mine came with a 60 profile front, which I hated. It felt like riding off the edge of the tyre in corners, and there were absolutely no chicken strips there! First tyre change I tried a 65 which was better but hard to come by. Second change I went for a 70 and never looked back. I didn't bother changing the suspension and the speedo difference was hardly noticeable.

  5. 9*6 are 120/70 profile and the chassis/suspension is identical to 748.

Don't worry about it, bike will be absolutely fine, and so will you.

  6. The speedo drive is the same on a 2002 748R as a 998.

By 2002 all 748-9** would have had 120/70 front tyres and the 2001 748R manual states it also had a 120/70 front tyre.

I have a PDF version of the 748R manual if you want a copy, it's for a 2001 model but would fundamentally be the same.

  7. having checked the owners handbook i can confirm that it did indeed leave teh factory with a 120/70 profile front tyre so all is good...
