Seems a lead story today (not that people are dying of war and starvation...) that peolple are discriminated against because of their 'body art'. On cue, fella with face coverd and lots of other 'art' (or shit as I refer to it) in his face Right or wrong: should an employer be able to say 'no thanks' on the basis of tattoos? Its simple for me: as long as a t-shirt or collared shirt can be worn, and none are on show hands, face, neck, all good in a customer facing or 'professional' capacity. One where first impressions count. Otherwise crack on. Ps I just do not get why peolple have them on face/hands/neck especially these behind the ears ones....unless you're a tattooist or you have no body space left. Is it an intimidation thing?
They should grow up. If a person chooses to tattoo their skin and then feel discriminated against because of others' reactions to the changes they've made to their body then they were naive or dumb. People are absolutely going to form an opinion based on visual impressions. If they're receiving compliments and adulation as a result of their "ink" do they also tell people to back off, or do they lap it up. For every person impressed and who thinks it's cool there will be a person who thinks it looks offensive / sheeplike / dumb / dull. If you want to be tattooed then go for it, but do it mindfully and don't be surprised when people judge you for better or worse based on your tattooed skin.
I think the whole reason why a lot of people have them in places that are on show 24/7 and can't be covered by clothing is a statement and I don't conform etc. They look great on the beach when you are 70 and your body shap has gone? Hahaha

Every adult is at liberty to do ill-advised or unwise actions from time to time, including having tattoos in discreet positions, and these do not affect employment prospects unless the prospective employer knows about them. But for example a criminal record is likely to put off employers recruiting for jobs which require trustworthiness; a visible tattoo implies extremely bad judgement on the part of the applicant, which for many jobs is a clear disqualification. Any tattoo is intended to be seen, so the question is: what message is it intended to impart to the observer? In the case of a visible tattoo (on the face, neck, hands, etc), the message would appear to be "I have chosen to mutilate myself irrevocably, and I don't give a shit who feels threatened, annoyed, or disgusted by this". The prospective employer's response, as far as any kind of responsible or customer-facing job is concerned, is likely to be "Fine, that is your right - but I'll be giving the job to somebody who does give a shit". Incidentally, I have noticed that several former tattoo parlours have recently been turned into tattoo removal parlours. People who have made supposedly irrevocable commitments later wanting to resile from them - now there's a thing!
Its art isnt it? And art’s subjective (the same as bikes). I dont have any but i'd employ 10 fellas/birds covered head to toe in tattoos over one smelly twat who cant be bothered to wash in the mornings. Far more offensive and you cant even see their BO.
The guy who didn't wash yesterday can wash tomorrow and every day thereafter. if required. The other guy, with the head to toe tattoos, is pretty much stuck with them forever however much he later regrets his folly.
If the customers whom you are trying to attract into your business are intimidated by an employee's tattoo, they will go elsewhere. As they depart, you can point out to them that they really need to get out more.
but who (or anyone else) are you to decide who gets offended by what and who gets bored of tattoos? its a personal choice and there are far worse choices than having a few lines drawn on your skin imo would you refuse to employ a lad with long hair? or piercings?
Racist customers are put off by staff of certain ethnicity, with the only difference being it is illegal to discriminate for ethnicity, yet it is possible (currently) to discriminate against tattoos.... The question, regardless of your views on the specific type, is should some types of visual discrimination be allowed and not others? In a fair and free world, the answer should be zero discrimination regardless.
I've noticed that the only time Pete is being judgemental is when he is typing. By the way, his judgements are sometimes very sound - he often hits the target, in a carpet-bombing sort of way.
I don't know about you but I discriminate all the time, and here is a dictionary definition of discriminate recognition and understanding of the difference between one thing and another. Regarding tattoos, would I discriminate against someone with a tattoo ? dead right I would, but it would depend upon the nature and location of the tattoo and what job was being applied for. Those who choose to get prominent tattoos have to take responsibility for that choice.
thats positive discrimination it can also be defined as "to unfairly treat a person or group of people differently from other people or groups" as im sure youre well aware
Personally tatoo's dont offend me. I dont discriminate against them....the last 2 IT lads we have employed have had them - one of them who left a few years back was really switched on...knew his stuff. Personally id never have one ever, i really dont like them for a multitude of reasons - my wife has one, she knows i dont like it, i was against her having one but its her choice and her bod.... While ive not got any tatoos ive got quite a lot of scars here and there over the years....some might find them just as offensive...
