Resign and get a years salary.....

  1. ....when did this start happening?

(George Entwhistle resigns from the BBC and gets a years salary of £450K)

......F*** me, if I had got a years salary every time I resigned, I wouldn't have needed to go to work......

  2. Standard resignation period the higher up the chain you get - helps ensure continuity.

I was on 3 months notice in my last place. I handed my notice in then went on gardening leave for the next 3 months. It was awesome getting paid to sit at home and not do anything!

  3. I was high up the chain back in the 80s and 90s, but I never got to see rewards for failure or resignation..........

  4. He resigned though - doesn't matter if he was failing or succeeding.

If he had stayed much longer he may well have been fired, which would have been a different matter.
It may well be that it is a large amount, but if those are the terms of the contract then both parties would have been aware of them when they signed up, so that is the choice you make at the time. Hindsight is a wonderful thing!

  5. I recall a sales director in one of my old jobs... Golden kick up the arse/out the door + 3 months garden.... 'cus he was crap at his job....

  6. maybe they could run the bbc properly on a proper business like basis rather than a charity and reduce the licence fee

  7. This appears to be normal practice when you have a captive contributor (ie. general public) paying, the same thing happens for council execs when they leave or get kicked out.

  8. So you are saying that when I joined Trafalgar House a number of years ago on a large salary, I should have said:

"Oh, and the contract must say if I resign after a month or so, I get a years salary"??

I think somehow the answer would have been 'B*llox' or 'On your bike'.

In the 80s and 90s you would have been lucky if you got more than an extra months money for redundancy, let alone anything for dismissal or resigning.

Seems to me it pays to f*** up these days.

  9. Elites looking after elites.

  10. I would say that 3 months is pretty much standard in any staff/admin job.

  11. If you are kicked out, yes......

  12. Indeed - if you were as good as you say you were then any company wouldn't have a problem with that as they want to keep you rather than let you go immediately!

Remember that these clauses work both ways, so a company cannot just fire you on the spot, in the same way that you cannot just walk away from the job.

As El Toro says, it's pretty much standard that people will have 3-month retention with directors having 6 or 12 months.

Whether or not that's valid at the BBC is a different question, but that's not what you asked ;)

  13. Never mind all that. If all tv/radio is digital these days, why can't we opt out of receiving BBC channels and avoid paying for a ridiculous 'license'?

  14. Not just thinking that tbh. I would reckon that the majority of staff jobs (white collar) would give a 3 months contract, which in theory should work both ways. But in my experience if you hand in your notice you can normally negotiate that down to a month with a bit of luck.

  15. I agree. Why should I pay to listen to propaganda

  16. Well....I must have of some small use to them.....I was on over £100K and was there for three years and didn't f*** up; but I didn't get a years salary when I resigned...........

I reckon I should have ballsed up completely and they might have given me a million to leave....

But you are right....I didn't ask that question.....I asked "when did it start happening?".........with a trick comment about not having to work if I kept resigning.

  17. The licence fee is something like £145 per year, that works out at just over £12 per month.
Even the basic SKY package comes in at £21.50 per month, that's £258 per year the top package costs £780 per year and gives you advertising that you are paying to receive.
The BBC is respected around the world for the quality of its broadcasting, it produces some of the best TV in the world, look at the standard of the BBC wildlife programmes, the original drama, the standard of the sports coverage and even the quality of the journalism. Those high standards set the bar for other broadcasters by having a higher standard to aim at, if we didn't have the BBC we'd end up with a diet of X-Factor and The Only Way is Essex every night on all channels with a few high cost subscription only sports and drama channels.

  18. The 1 year salary was only supposed to be paid if he was sacked, not if he resigned! It's all a cover up to keep the well off sweet. If I resign I get nothing, same if I'm sacked. I think it's disgusting!

  19. Actually not quite true - you have a notice period in your employment terms, so if you resigned you would be entitled to those terms.
Some companies expect you to work your notice, some companies stick you on gardening leave.
Again this varies depending upon your industry and position within the company.

  20. Crikey, I don't know how you lived on such meagre pocket change!!
