Valve Check 999

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Cream_Revenge, Oct 8, 2016.

  1. 996 went to Geoff @ Baines Racing, I should have taken the 999 but going to Silverstone and back was a pain and the wife complained about the 2 1/2 hour round trip twice and it was £100 cheaper.
I won't make the same mistake again........
-side note, do you use the cold start lever?

  2. No, i'm not, but it didn't before any work was done. Maybe correct valve adjustment has put it "right" showing up a TPS issue that was hiding due to valves being slightly out?

  3. @El Toro , can you merge the threads please?

  4. No mate. My 749s timing, tps angle is slightly different to a 999 though.

  5. Threads merged :)

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  6. They haven't "adjusted" the valves, didn't they say they'd measured them and everything's in spec ( I don't believe they even did that )

I always use the lever, mine won't catch without it.

  7. They said adjusted. I'll double check tomorrow.

  8. Interesting you always need the cold start though.

I'm wondering why I need it now and didn't before though????

Reset my new sparkers to .9mm as per my old ones last night. Both sets NGK.

  9. If the adjuster pulleys are rotated the wrong way, it would bring the opposing teeth of the belt together, not the backs of them.

  10. Don't know thought it was standard practice, it'll just labour without it and won't catch, with it it'll fire up fairly easy idling at 3Kish leave it a few seconds then gradually reduce it as she warms up all done in less than a minute.

  11. If they were adjusted, that would imply shims were changed. I know some workshops exchange shims so as to reduce the cost (shims are not cheap) so did your bill include or refer to shims ? Andy

  12. Horizontal is defiantly ok, not checked vertical.

  13. That's exactly what I found today. No idea why it's changed.

  14. I thought that too, but no, no mention of shims on bill. I thought there should be.

I'm undecided if they just got mixed up and just wanted out door or if I'm actually being had here.

  15. To be honest mate, whether it was a stitch up or a genuine mistake, there's no way I'd be going back there again.

What kind of company mixes up the servicing requirement for two similar vehicles?!

If the mechanic can't be arsed to check a registration plate against the works order and query it if there are two similar machines in at the same time, then he certainly ain't going to check and adjust desmo valve gear!

As previous posters have said, either learn to do it yourself or if you're not feeling up to that, get yourself along to a reputable independent.

Not sure where you are, but if you're within striking distance of Louigi Moto near Bristol you won't go wrong. I wouldn't let anyone else touch my bikes if I can't do something :upyeah:

  16. I mailed them today (closed Monday) stating the starting issue. Will see what they say.
Currently thinking I'll just take it on the chin and take it to Geoff Baines, just a ball ache as its 2 1/2 round trip twice and wife's not keen on it. Busy family and all that.

Trading Standards will tell me I have to let them sort it.

  17. Question, which set of nuts comes off to check and/or adjust valve clearances?

  18. The 6 hex bolts on top of the cover in the second pic, examine the joint where the black rubber gasket is it should be obvious if it's been apart :Watching:

  19. There was a slight smudge of oil round it, I assume that would stack up to removal.

It looks more like it came off than the horizontal.

  20. So, do you just whip those 6 bolts off, pull the head, find TDC and stick yer feelers in? Or is there more to it?
