Sorry if this is a stupid question.. Keep having idea's to kit my 899 with Ohlins and was wondering what the difference is between just going for internals and the full fork?
Hi Adamwhittuk agree with what the others said nearly half the price on the front end & it will be set up for you , i'm about to fit some Matris cartridges into 1199 marzoochi's i think these will work very well check out there feedback , so cartridge wise i would try these & decent shock for example Nitron ,maxton , ohlins , k-tech , you 'll absolutely love it .
Had K-Tech internals fitted to the forks on my Streetfighter, paired with Ohlins TTX on the back. I only had the piston kit and to be honest for road riding it offers better performance than I'll ever be able to utilise. I could have gone the full cartridge kit including the springs but that was nearly double the cost of the piston kit and the suspension guy didn't think there was any advantage since I don't ride the bike on the track and there was no point changing the springs when there was nothing wrong with the originals and they were still the correct length and right for my weight. Got it all done, supplied, fitted and set up, ride in/ride out for £1600. Handling is now amazing, compliant but utterly composed. Does need a better steering damper though.
everything I have heard and read suggests the valves are the big weak point on the forks, so no surprise changing them made such a difference.
Valves are a big upgrade, I had a set of k-tech valves in my Daytona forks, but u can't seem to buy a valve kit for the 899 forks (or couldn't when I looked), first step would be good oil, and get the rear shock rebuilt for £200 rather than replace. MCT did mine, they say there is a known issue with the shock and how it flows oil and it's been brilliant since, it was even great on track, no fade or issues and great tyre life. From new I believe manufacturers fill the forks with 'first fill' oil which is gritty, it has none of the anti friction additives like a proper aftermarket oil so that's a good cheap improvement. Fork cartridges are good but will be track focussed and on the road that might be an issue! Best of with valves and new oil. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I didn't think the Ohlins on the 1199s was that mind blowing actually yet on my Daytona 675R the bike was transformed even with the standard OEM stuff Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
biturbo kits get some good reviews, and quite a lot of racers use them. Cheaper than ktech and ohlins normally
I seem to remember the OE damping needles were stepped and quite crude. Adjustment was all or nothing and fine tuning was impossible. You could never get it just right. The K-tech valves had tapered needles so fine adjustments could be made. Made a huge difference.
Thanks for all the feedback. Decided I'm going with the ohlins rear and damper.... just need to make a final decision on the front
They make the standard stuff to a price so normally valves are sacrificed. It's why most race bikes will have internals changed to a ktech or ohlins kit rather than put standard road ohlins in. £2000 new on kit isn't much less expensive than new regular ohlins forks WP however seem to be great as fitted on KTMs from what I have read. Just springs and oil needed there
