UNIVERSAL MOTORCYCLE REGULATOR & UPGRADE KIT SHINDENGEN MOSFET FH020AA | eBay This is the one I bought, it's gone up a bit since I purchased mine but there are cheaper ones around. Steve
What is your fire up time in seconds? With everything else at full health + the cables you should be firing in approx. 1 second, maybe 2 with the high comp engine. Have you checked the cranking voltage of the battery?
I'll have to check at the weekend for definite, but I believe the cranking voltage is now around 12.1 - 12.4 volts. Before it was as low as 10.8. The bike has always fired up well from cold even with poor cranking speed, probably after the first couple of turns. The issue was it was only turning over once a second or so, sometimes even less than that, in a very irregular way. Now it cranks 3 times a second or so and sounds strong. I'll see if I can record the new starting and post it here to show you.
A Yuasa AGM will complete the transformation while remaining safe and reliable. They have considerably better CCA (cold cranking amps) ratings than straight lead acid, so pack a much bigger punch. If you're still somewhat wary of lithium, that's the way to go.
It is widely acknowledged to be unreliable, yes. There is a bit that can be done though to make the whole charging system more reliable, there are plenty of threads covering this. Steve
The plug that connects the reg/rec to the generator is known to overheat and burn out and the wires from the generator to that plug are also regarded as undersize, most people upgrade the cables and replace the plug or solder the connection. After my original rec failed I replaced it with an Electrex unit which only lasted 12 months so I assesed the situation and fitted the Shindengen unit 3 years ago, I also fitted a charging monitor which is an led fitted to the dash which changes colour and flashes at different charging states, I also went the whole hog and fitted the reg/rec behind the rear number plate to help keep it cool ( the original isn't helped with its location next to the exhaust).
