I would like to remove the Datatool 3 alarm from my 749, is it a question of tracing the wires back to where they join the loom and chopping them off, or is there any other function that the alarm has that would render the bike inoperable if I remove it. I'm a sparky, so should be able to do this ( famous last words) but thought I would check before I get stuck in.
I would trace the wires back to the loom..... When I removed an early Datatool from a bike, the bl**dy thing wouldn't stop screaming even though it was on the floor, until I smashed it with a hammer. I had also cut all the wires, but two immobilised the ignition and I couldn't find which two so I could simply join them......so in the end I traced them back to the loom and found I had to rejoin several of the OEM loom. The aftermarket alarm units that have been fitted to my bikes and cars have been nothing but effing trouble (even some OEM ones were a bl**dy nuisance).....so I have a very simple alarm fitted to the bike now......b*gger all current drain when 'on', nothing when 'off'. AL
John do a quick test, start the bike up and when it is running arm the alarm to check if it will cut engine off. If not try to ride away if not again good news it is not connected to ignition circuit. Final test engine off key out arm the alarm wait for it to be fully armed (30s) then put key in ignition and see if you can start the bike normally. If you can again it means alarm is not connected to immobiliser circuit. I had encountered 2 system 3 datatools connected like that to T9 series one was mine. If all is like mine have a bucket full of water ready, chop the alarm off and drop it to said bucket as it will go off and will be sounding for quite some time. Use the V+ and V- as accessory socket
Thank you all for your very helpful replies, I shall be going in deep tomorrow wiv me sidecutters. I have already got a piece of gaffer tape masking most of the sound, my plan is to whip the cover off the alarm unit and remove the battery, not too sure how feasible that is though until I get stuck in!
find some installation instructions online. Once you have them, removal should, in the best haynes tradition be a reversal of fitting......
Things you should know: Datatool are a bunch of tossers to deal with, they will not help you in any way. Depending on who installed it there may be other alterations to the loom that aren't obvious (I removed a datatool from my SV1000 and permanently immobilised it, got an auto-elec in to look at it and he couldn't find the problem either, I ended up buying a secondhand loom). Wrap the alarm in a towel before you disconnect, otherwise you'll go deaf (I just wrapped mine in a dustsheet and threw it in the corner of the shed - it was still going off a week later!).
Figaro I have had a piece of gaffer tape permanently over the sounder as i realized it was irritating me so much , works very well. Kickboxer I intend to remove it without damage, I will see how it goes!
For anyone interested, here is installation instructions: http://www.matt-thornton.net/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2-DATATOOL_SYSTEM_3-1.doc
