Stripping Heads For Valve Guide Work - 900ss

  1. Stripping the heads for some guide work.

Got down to everything but the cam shaft bearings. I was going to pull the lot (inner bearing / speedo drive gear / outer bearing) through into the inside. I consulted Haynes manual first which said - knock the outer one out from the inside using a drift on inner race - remove speedo drive - then knock inner one out from the outside.

    Is this other people experience.

Can I pull them all through to the inside as I planned - Is there a step.

I know some may say just do as the manual says but I hate hammer the crap out of things.

    Any guidance welcome.

    Cheers Gaz.

  2. Warm the heads in the oven and the bearings will fall out, no hammering required.

  3. Recently replaced these bearings in mine, didn't take much hammering to remove them. I found it easier to get the bigger internal bearing out first (from the outside) then the smaller extrnal bearing from the inside - won't go through as there is a step.

I wouldn't worry about damaging the bearings, they don't cost much so fit new ones.

To re-fit I heated the head/froze the bearings and they dropped in really easily.

N.B. when fitting the outer if you push it in too far it will push the inner bearing in due to the spacer.

P.S. bearings are; 6003/C3 outer bearing, 6004/C3 inner bearing.

  4. oh, very funny!

  5. I love this site, thanks both.

The confirmation of a step negates my second question of measuring how far the bearings are recessed and/or stick out. Would presume at this stage inner is pressed into a step - from comments the outer could press the inner out if pushed in too hard.

Any tips on removing the one in end cap without buying a slide hammer tool.

    Top Tips.

    Cheers Gaz.

  6. I did notice that one after I posted but did not want to draw attention to such a poor play on words.

    Cheers Gaz.

  7. Bearings out with a combination of pulling and a little tapping for the last bit.

Can obviously confirm step on inside for bigger bearing.

Would add one thing. The speedo drive gear when centralised provides a step to to press (not hammer) the outer bearing with. If you want to hammer just move it out of the way, once the bearings are separated a bit, the gear rattles around in there.

Still any tips on removing the one in end cap without buying a slide hammer tool.

    Photo, everyone likes a photo.

    Cheers Gaz.

  8. Removed bearing from end cap. As mentioned above applied some heat. Put in oven supported with bearing facing downwards hoping that when it got to temperature it would drop out. I took it up to approx 200 deg C on the oven dial for about 10-15 mins but nothing.

Took bearing out (that reminds me I need some new oven gloves) got the biggest button head cap screw that would fit through the hole - a couple of quick pulls backwards not much force at all and it popped out.

I was really really disappointed because I really wanted to try this. Pilot bearing removal with bread - YouTube

    Cheers Gaz

  9. Sorry bearing in end cap - SKF 6202 - RS1 / C3 (RS1 = seal on one side facing out when installed)

    Cheers Gaz
