  1. I've had a few try this kind of thing with me before

  2. Me too, more than you'd believe. Mainly filtering on my scooter, to and from work. Only yesterday afternoon a car moved towards the centre of the road to block me.

  3. The really scary thing is that according to the acticle the defendant had been in jail from 19 October 2015 and this report was 31 March 17....Does that mean it takes nearly 18 months to get to court in the USA? What if he'd been found innocent.....

  4. He would have made some new friends and useful contacts..

  5. Bail after charge is usually readily available in most USA states. If this guy was remanded in custody without bail for 18 months he must have had quite some prior history. Maybe skipped bail before? Intimidated witnesses? Threatening to the judge in court?

Generally speaking, if people who have been remanded in custody later get acquitted, or a non-custodial sentence, it is just too bad. To obtain compensation they would have to show false arrest, malicious prosecution, false imprisonment, or something on those lines; merely being found not guilty would not normally be enough.

In some USA states, people who have been imprisoned are handed a bill for their food and lodging in prison when they are released, so they are saddled with a large debt which if poor they cannot pay.
