What's That Horrible Noise Quiz :(

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Nelson, May 19, 2017.

  1. Is it fecked...? @Mr.R May reconise it? Crankcase bearing?
Checked the oil and nothing in there.
Noticed a pretty grim sound in noise when loading up after my last track day.
Any thoughts? Clearly not a welcome noise :(

  2. Pull in the clutch and does it change?

  3. Slightly

  4. MTS engine, so wet clutch.

  5. starter not disengaging?

  6. Hard to tell from the video. When my bearings and crank went it was quite a clinky/noise. Bag of spanners, exactly like people say.

It started out only slightly audible but got worse very quickly. I did an oil change to see what came out and nothing untoward showed up in the oil or on the magnet. Only opening it up diagnosed it. You may have to do the same.

  7. If you do a Fred Dibnah listen with a big screw driver it sounds like a rough ball bearing type sound rather than a knocking.
My first (rather over optimistic) thoughts were water pump bearing..But I've never heard of one going.
Not sure it's safe to be thrashing on track day!

  8. Where is it coming from? Top or bottom?
I can't really hear enough to know what that is, but when my #3 big end let go on my race bike it sounded much more clattery than that. I had an XT600 that made a lot of cam-knocking noises (they all do that sir...) which, of the nasty noises I've heard on a motorbike sounded most like what I can hear there.

clutch test is still important - if it goes away when the clutch goes in, it's downstream of the clutch.

We should start a library of nasty noises...

  9. Bottom/middle.
Screwdriver on the water pump or inspection plate is worst.

  10. Bearing inside the LH cover....

  11. mmmm.... ahh....
I would start with the waterpump as it's the cheapest thing round there... beyond that I'm not sure.

Random thought - have you been round and checked nothing has worked loose? I remember thinking my superdream top-end had gone, it turned out to be the keys rattling on the handlebars...

  12. Does the noise vary with revs? I noted you never revved in vid. Its a kinda shewwwwin noise. I did once have a stem on my , 48tooth lol, work loose and the allen screw which holds the spring wore a nice groove round the inside of my clutch cover. Similar noise but youve a wet clutch i believe. Id have that cover off and have a nosey around in there.

  13. Increases with revs . Getting louder now.
Bike suddenly ruining V rough as well. :(

  14. Oh dear. :(

  15. mmmm.... I'd stop there, it's not sounding good. But before you strip it (or pay someone else to), do work round for things like loose bolts and the like.

My money's on a bottom end letting go (which my happen to you when you get the bill...)

  16. Gutted for you after all that work..............

  17. Loose alternator?

  18. Cheers .
    Started taking the cover off.
This is a bloody low mileage engine!

  19. Which year multi?

  20. Sounds like the left side main bearing to me
