Mother in law is 92 and still living on her own in her own house. Wife wants to install cctv monitoring which can be checked remotely, so we can see if she's ok, and wants me to look at what is available. Currently, the house doesn't have wi-fi, so presumably that would need to be installed. Anyone got any recommendations?
I have something similar to this Ron. CCTV 1.3MP cameras are what I went for, better resolution than some online. I can view the cameras remotely from anywhere on my Iphone. I recently went to Belgium and had no problem viewing them in real time. You don't need WiFi, as the unit will plug directly into a modem, but you obviously do need a said modem with internet connection to view remotely. They switch to infa red once the ambient light drops below a certain level With 4 cameras, ny system records to the internal hard drive for 8 dats before overwiting itself. You can save and down load images of clips of anything recorded. I installed it myself in a day. The cameras are what took the time. On the downside. The infr red lights attract insects at night time and therefore spiders. You have to clean webs from them every month or so.
They need wifi and electricity. I forgot to mention that they have a mic and speaker so you can have a conversation over them too which could be very useful for what you want.
I see this doesn't come with a hard drive, what hdd did you have to buy for this? is it a special interanl one, or can you attach any hdd to it? what sort of size hdd have you got to cover 8 days of recording? cheers, Pete
This is similar to the one I bought. I never spotted that this one doesn't have a hard drive, mine has which makes sense as it was a bit more expensive at £130.
I wondered if it was a straight swap he was looking for.... I like the look of those listed above, been looking for something similar for the garage so I can keep and eye out every now and then.
The app on my IPhone is called XM Eye. It allows you to view live video from your cameras and play back from any point in time; any content recorded on your hard drive.
Zmodo wifi camera. I have 4. £35-40 on amazon. They take USB power from mains and I can remote view. Also has mic/speaker. They're also in the process of rolling out a cloud storage system (it presently records short clips of movement). I signed up to their trial of the cloud storage and it's good. Can't wait for the actual rollout.
She has short term memory loss, which is getting progressively worse - most days she doesn't know where she is, so her family are constantly calling in to make her meals and keep the house tidy. If we told her that cameras were going in, she'd forget within two minutes. It's got to the stage where she will watch old wedding videos repetitively, over and over again, each time professing that she has never seen this video before.
Could be that but also my dad who has onset dementia, isn't quite at the camera level yet but if I did, I know most of the time he would be picking his nose, pulling out his ear hair or scratching his nuts, as to his toilet functions , I dread to think. I asked if mum had asked for it more because I think at some point most of us would have to have that discussion and was interested in how you approached it.
My boss and his brothers have done similar at their mother's house. Cctv in the hall, entrance and kitchen (nothing too intrusive, just want to see her moving about). They've also hooked up a smart thermostat as she had a habit of whacking it on max, then sitting in the living room with cooling fans on & complaining it was too hot. The latest was a smart lock so they can remotely unlock when she locks herself out. Also means they can give guest access to carers and things.
The only real use I can see for smart homes is stuff like this. Allowing people the dignity and comfort of remaining in their own home, a familiar setting, while doing what is possible to alleviate the risks of being so old and having memory challenges.
We signed the mother in law up to Plusnet for telephone and broadband. Then bought some pan and tilt IP cameras off ebay. They were a doddle to set up using the provided android and ios app. Remote access and two way coms. I picked up a later IP cam from Gearbest for under £15. This takes a 32gb micro sd card and records, uses a different app though. It came with a US mains adaptor but I had a suitable UK one left over from an old router.
I have to ask, mostly because I know my dad and what he's like. Have you ever seen them tap the camera thinking you are permanently at the other end?
