This is completely untrue. They do not pay what the market dictates because they are not part of that market. Commercial broadcasters (apart from C4 which is part-owned by - but not answerable to - the taxpayer) have to compete for ratings in order to attract advertising revenue. The BBC does not. It has a guaranteed income which it extracts from a state-levied tax on owning a television. No matter how talentless its presenters nor how drivelling its output the BBC's income stream remains constant. The corporation may deride extra income from selling programmes overseas but if it wishes to be a commercial programme maker it should do so without public subsidy from taxpayers who are forced to fund its output but do not have the option of voting with their feet if they don't like the end product. Scrap the license fee and let the BBC live or die in the real world and free people who do not support this intensely partisan and ideologically driven bureaucracy from being forced to pay for its propagandising. I too enjoy some of the BBC's genuinely world class programmes, particularly the wildlife series, and would happily pay to watch those without having to fund the politicised drivel. In fact I already do. I buy box sets of series which I like from Amazon, as can anyone. This being the case there is no justification for the license fee.

Why do people insist upon believing that the BBC is in competition with Murdoch? They are both on the same page, agenda-wise. Both striving towards the same goal. Or do you not even question why the BBC is still publicly funded through coercion and threats, rather than required to sail on the seas of the market like the rail companies, the utilities, the Royal Mail, etc? The BBC would sink within six months of privatisation. The elites do not want this, but not because David Attenborough would then become unemployed. The BBC exists primarily to provide the population with the illusion that there is an impartial, non-commercial and reliable source of news, information and entertainment. It is there so that when we rail against Murdoch, we feel we have a nice safe zone to retreat to in order to feel better. A population needs its security blanket, no matter how threadbare it might be. A metaphor for you:- we are the lambs, the BBC is the shepherd, Murdoch the wolf.
