Anyone seen Dunkirk the new film yet? Im seeing/hearing widely conflicting reviews from thems there who are supposed to know.. Marc Comode said its one of his all time favourite 3 films.. others have written that there's no plot! ( yeah rite, the plot is we try to rescue as many of our troops as we can that are being pushed into the sea by the enemy, simply plot but there it is) Some say the sound is over powering ( sorry, what did you say) then there's those saying it shows spitfires and hurricanes fighting stukas and me109's over Dunkirk itself! That didn't happen, yes they fought the Hun in the sky but in different areas and not over the beachs of Dunkirk.. that's why some shot down RAF pilots who made it to Dunkirk to be rescued were thrown off their own ships and boats by the British army as they felt the RAF had let them down, The RAF glory boys, left us for slaughter as they put it.. I know it's a promo shot but factually Stuka's, other than take off or landing would never be seen flying like this.. from altitude they would dive, release their bombs, before pulling Straight up and back to altitude, I guess at a push if the RAF were not about (factually they were not) the rear gunner might have been used to strife our marooned troops ... Anyway be nice to hear from you guys as to what you thought ....
Saw it Friday. It's a bit short on historical info as the film starts as they are leaving the beaches so no explanation of how they got to that point for younger watchers who know nothing of ww2. it is very loud in places but not in general and visually it's very good. There were fighters over the beaches during the evacuation. Your right that most were fighting inland trying to slow the German advance or over the sea but nearly 400 RAF planes were lost in action over the evacuation period and a fair few fell on or around the beaches. One of the spitfires that crashed onto the beach and got swamped by the sea was recovered a few years back and is being rebuilt at Biggin Hill. Might even be flying by now. The archives also show that most of the fighting took place above 20,000 feet so the average soldier on the beach would not be able to tell what was British or German given their small size and height.
Going to see it next week but there was a review by some American paper/magazine that there's a total lack of 'non whites' and females in it which is a little off putting.
should be but I'm sure you don't look it. wonder how it will compare to saving Private Ryan. nothing compares to the opening scenes on that movie.
That's probably because during the campaign at Dunkirk there was a lack of 'non whites and females' present. Let's face it, the spams don't really do accuracy when it comes to war films.
I was sat across the isle from an old gentleman when I watched Saving Private Ryan at the cinema, the look on his face during the opening scene said so much.
If there were no "non whites" at Dunkirk in 1940, why would they put them in the film if it's to be factually correct. There are some female nurses on the ships and a few female civilians on the rescue boats in the film. The evacuation British wise is almost entirely the BEF which were male regulars not conscripts and as far as I know there were no black soldiers in the BEF at the time. First Black soldiers to fight on French soil were at Dieppe I believe (Canadians) in 1942 Cream Revenge - Film is not gory just loud in places but I think it's a 12 rating so getting an 8 year old in might be tricky.
yip. cant even begin to imagine what that or any conflict was like. all i know is never mess with an old dude. they can probably break you with their pinky. as i witnessed once a good few years ago when two lads started on one in a bar in fortbill.
The producers recorded high velocity rounds hitting pig carcasses. So yeah, it made me wince a bit too....
amazing part of world history. my granddad started his WW2 in nov 41 in moscow ( he was one of those dudes who marched from red square straight in to battle) , all the way to kennisberg early 45 and then transferred to japan , so didnt finish his war till sep 45. proper people they were those days
Thanks - I wouldn't be pretending he's 12, it's a 12A I believe which means it's up to me if i traumatise my child. He is doing WW2 at school next year so thought it would be "educational". I may wait till DVD though.
It's made by the entertainment industry and has to recoup it's cost and hopefully a profit so there was always going to be an element of artistic licence and should be seen as such. It will hit the key points probably but depending what country makes it, those key points will have different importance. See it for what it is and take away from it what you will
I thought it started well. Then it went down hill. The spitfire running on fumes and still fighting...im trying not to spoil the film too much was too much for me.
If you have ever seen U571 and how that story was mutilated by the US film industry then you will think Dunkirk is on the money pretty much. I hear there is a re make of the Battle Of Britain planned. If it's a Us film, probably using p51's and flown by lots of bronzed Californians.
For me it didn't go into enough depth, probably because it was only a 12 certificate therefore the true horror couldn't be depicted. Also it didn't get the true scale of the evacuation across to the audience. Its a good watchable and it gives the younger generation a history lesson but don't expect a film like 'Saving Private Ryan' or 'Schindlers List' those films were harrowing from start to finish and gave the viewer an unimaginable insight into the true horror and suffering of WW2.
