Alternative Browser For An I Pad Ii

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by Android853sp, Jul 31, 2017.

  1. My Ipad has come close to being smashed into little pieces thanks to the unreliability and utter crapness of Safari. In the last hour it has failed to load a wide variety of pages from a wide variety of websites, probably between 15 and 20 times. As a browser it's pretty awful normally but over the last few weeks it has got worse. Is anyone using anything else with any success ? Andy

  2. Are you sure it's Safari that's the problem?
Imho, more likely to be Wifi or service provider.
Have you tried the old standby of rebooting both the iPad and your router??
Routers definitely work better if you reboot them every couple of weeks and iPads are often just topped up and left on, so the same applies.

  3. iPad 2? That's what I have/use. It's coming to the end of its life. It's not Safari I don't think.

  4. Yes, absolutely sure it's Safari. No problems what so ever with the wifi set up using Android and MSW10 on the same router (not concurrently). From reading, it seems to me that Safari is generally disliked and Apple hobble their mobile devices by not allowing alternate browsers to operate independantly. Andy

  5. Fecking thing is still under warranty and to my dissatisfaction, has never since its purchase, matched the performance of the first generation iPad it replaced. Andy

  6. I can tell on a daily basis that it's getting slower. Plus now it's started to freeze on a regular basis and I've got to reboot it more than ever. Bloody thing!

  7. Chrome works well. I agree about Safari, it's rubbish. Can't do internet banking with it, can do so with Chrome. My bike's tracker web site won't work with Safari, but works with Chrome.

  8. I'd make sure it's backed up to a computer (not cloud), and then put it in DFU mode and do a fresh install of ios.

Google the above and you'll get a walk through and links for a fresh download of the ipsw ios file.

It'll probably sort it all out

  9. Why do folk continue to buy Apple? Android stuff much much cheaper and more accessible to either load your own stuff on, or format and start again. Can you guys not do a full hard/soft factory reset?

  10. Could it be clogged up with photos or other files??

  11. I use safari all the time on iPhone no problem

  12. Half a dozen photos, 4 pdfs and about 20 internet links, 64Gb memory. Andy

  14. Apple Store??

  15. Everybody is young enough to be my grand son/daughter and they talk at me as if my white hair equates to sinility. I've been back twice and left dissatisfied on both occasions. Genuinely thinking about firing up the original iPad which never gave me any issues and I do not know what I was thinking when I talked myself into buying the iPad 2 expecting it to be superior. 16. Well it's not an unreasonable assumption...

  17. I use Chrome and Firefox which also syncs with my laptop\iphones\etc.

Not had a problem at all with my Ipad.

  18. Even if you put Chrome or other browsers on iOS you're still using Safari, just through a different interface. Apple don't permit 3rd HTML rendering engines on their platform.

What version of iOS are you using? 9.2 and higher is better.

  19. "I'd make sure it's backed up to a computer (not cloud), and then put it in DFU mode and do a fresh install of ios."

    @damodici
Would be grateful if you could explain to me what's the difference between backing up on the computer and backing up on the cloud.
I'm 64 ,can just about get by with holding my head above water with using computers, but I do struggle.
The reason I like Apple stuff is although I fully appreciate I loose the ability to do some things that non Apple users might be able to do, all I want is the bloody thing to work without constant Requests to download things which I seldom understand and can rarely find where they have gone anyway, even if I did know what to do with them if I could find them!
The beauty of Apple for me is every thing just works easily.

  20. Backing up to a computer would probably involve using iTunes to do a back up onto the computer's hard-drive. Backing up onto the cloud is backing up onto a server somewhere remote on the internet.
