I recently sold 2 ECUs on eBay to a chap in Japan. One removed from a 1098 and the other from a Hypermotard. Upon receiving them he opened a return case claiming neither of them work. I know the history of both ECUs with the 1098 unit being off my own bike so I see no reason why they shouldn't be working. At first I thought he was trying to pull a fast one but as with eBay I had no choice but to accept the return. I got them back today half expecting them to have been replaced with some corroded old duffers. However they are definitely the ones I sent him. I'm a little confused by it to be honest. The only thing I can think of is that maybe when they went through the scanner the magnets corrupted the information. Is this plausible ? Any ideas much appreciated. Cheers. Jason.
I wouldnt habe thought so as when Termi's are imported from Italy surely they must go through a scanning process to make sure nothing else is concealed ? Have you tried them at all ?
Have posted ECUs abroad using Airmail without any issue. Most recently to Israel. I can test the ECUs for you.
That's a good point about them being imported and going through the scanner at the airport. Thanks for your offer @chrisw thats much appreciated. I will try and test them but may take up your offer. Thanks.
Unless he was buying them because his were buggered due to electrical fault on his bike hence yours are now also buggered.
I would have thought scanners would be OK as we send stuff all around the world with no issue. Much more likely to be ESD (Electrostatic discharge) blowing the chips. Much more common than people think. Most people, including me, don't follow correct ESD procedure when using bike ECU's
As camera's, MP3 players, memory cards etc etc can go through scanners without fault I very much doubt an ECU would have any problem. I'm with ibrinkbeer .. Is he blowing ECU's by using bad tuning software ?
Could also be nothing wrong with them and he has just downloaded the image and flashed to his bikes, then returned your ecu's Better get them checked
Thanks for all the replies and ideas. Chris has kindly said he'll take a look at them. Hopefully he'll be able to shed a bit of light on it all. If just one had been faulty I'd have just put it down to bad luck but both of them doesn't stack up in my mind so I suspect something suspicious may have gone on. Anyway we'll see.

I wonder if he bought them to cure a self diagnosed problem but when he tried them, they didn't cure his problem so thought I'll send them back and get my money back? The other option of course is during the time he bought it and it arrived, he found a cheaper set?
I don't think he'd of bought any cheaper. He paid £55 for the 1098ecu and £75 for the hyper. A bargain even if I do say so myself. What's pissing me off is I'm having to cover the cost of the return postage from Japan which was £32 each because it went through ebays global shipping program (I only charged £5 each for postage). I could have posted them to Japan for £15 myself yet eBays GSP shafted him £64 which I'm now having to pay!
The ECUs arrived today. Guess what, I have been able to connect to both ECUs using my diagnostic kit. I have also downloaded the map out of one of them. Both ECUs are fine and are working. They don't have any immo issues either. Strongly suspect Operator Error on behalf of the buyer. A common mistake is not to fit the small earthing fly lead on the ECU heatsink bolt. This prevents the ECU from working. Strong snotty to ebay, but I wouldn't hold your breath.
