Fox Got My Cat

Found her dead and disembowelled on the pavement across the street last night. Buried her at around midnight. She was only 3 years old. She was a bit simple and slow so never stood a chance. Lovely cat though. Always followed you around the house and had a unique personality. The girlfriend is taking it badly because she spent a lot of time with her in the house on her own. Lost another cat 3 years ago when he was only 9 months old. Just got the 5 year old left now.

I guess I can count myself fortunate that the two worst things to ever happen to me are the loss of pets in sudden unexpected ways.
It's gonna take a long time to get over though. Took a couple of years before I stopped thinking about the other guy on a daily basis.

I think it would have been a quick death and that gives me comfort.

  3. If that's a British Blue, I have one almost identical - she is about 9 - maybe 10 years old. Slow and stupid for the most part - will insist on going outside at night when the foxes are about. Although she holds her own against our dog (which looks a lot like a fox) I have always had my doubts if she could warn a fox off.

Luckily the dog always wants to go out at the same time and barks a lot, so hopefully he scares the fox off whn it regularly prowls around here. I'm happy to shoot the damn fox (and sometimes the dog) with some 12g buckshot cartridges but Mrs Arq wouldn't like it if I did. I point out she wouldn't like it if the fox got the cat.

Sorry to hear about your cat - I guess the only consolation is at least you found it and know what happened.

  6. Yeah the worst part about the other cat was never finding out what happened. Could have been a car or theft or a fox. Though seeing her disemboweled and lifeless will take a long time to get over.

  9. Really sorry to hear that camelfarmer - I didn't realise foxes attacked cats. Hope your other cat goes on to live a long and pampered life. We're always a bit anxious when our two cats go out in the evening, but more due to the risk of them being hit by cars - weird, as we didn't used to be quite so worried about our previous cats. Although we try to shut the cat flap when it gets dark, we sometimes give in to the frantic hammering of paws when one of them is really keen to go out and open it, before he breaks the cat flap mechanism.

  10. Yeah and my problem was the one cat who is older and wiser is fine outside. This one was just figuring it out. But being the runt of the litter, she wasn't a quick learner. She loved being outside though, so I don't regret it.

  11. Have you heard of the cat killer of croydon? 250+ cats have been killed there,....yet the news doesn't inform people of this persons actions. Sorry for your loss

  12. Sorry to hear about your cat, had the same some years back. The cat got bitten in the fight but saw it off, but died from infection. It was extremely sad.... we may be tough bike riders but we love our pets. We have a family dog, we got him when my wife was recovering from breast cancer...he's a big part of the family.

  13. Have lost two of our five cats not so long ago. Still nearly call for them at times and it’s clear the others miss them, especially the brother to one of them.
    Sorry to hear your news.

  18. Foxes have been known to take dead cats back for their cubs to play with.
They will kill anything they're big enough to tackle. They're a serious pest in the wrong place and misguided people who encourage urban foxes because they look cute on Springwatch are making a big mistake.

  20. I don't encourage them. But I understand they're a part of the environment I live in. It's a risk you have to take with letting a cat out. I wouldn't support a cull or anything along those lines.
