996 996sps Quandry

  1. i have a 996SPS that’s been sitting in my garage since last October and I’m wondering what to do with it.

It’s been a track bike most of its life which began in Ireland in 2000 and I used it to race the second half of the season last year.

I could either sell it as it is or slowly restore it to its original road trim but would it be worth doing that financially?

  2. Cut you losses and sell it as is (to me, cheap) :):upyeah:

  3. horn + license plate + daytime MOT = awesome cool road bike.

  4. Genuine Ohlins SPS has got to be worth re-registering. From the photo it doesn't look like you need much in the way of mirrors and lights

  5. if your going to sell it as a road bike could get expensive, as there not the original fork for the purists, id sell as a race bike.

does look cracking as a race bike!! :upyeah:

  6. Oi bellend...

Personally I don't think it will fetch the money as a "race" bike; you'll limit the market and people will see it as something that's been thrashed within an inch of its life and will go bang the first time they ride it. It's also very specific and not something that fits easily into any existing classes without being way over the odds anyway compared to an IL4 in the same class.

Putting it back into a road bike shouldn't be too much hassle. You could retain the lower fairings as they have the side-stand cut-out, and fit a new top fairing with headlight holes. A biposto rear seat would be cheaper than a mono but if you need one let me know as I have a good source.

Depending on what you already have in the way of spares will obviously help to keep the price down, but there are plenty of spares out there to do it.

Have a look at prices on ebay and autotrader to get a feel for what they're going for and adjust your price as necessary based on condition, extras, etc. Don't forget it's the wrong time of year to sell now, so doing the conversion over winter and selling in the spring may be your best bet to maximise return.

  7. It is however the right time to buy

  8. I would definitely convert it back to road. As others have said it doesnt look like it needs much. You can then also make money by selling the bits you take off separately.

  9. Best get looking for another set of ohlins forks then.

  10. Well that’s nice, innit?

I can’t be bothered with doing lots to it and I have none of the road going parts because I bought it as a track bike long after it was first converted.

Especially things like putting the original forks back in. It’s too much hassle.

  11. I think you just answered your own question then didn't you?

  12. Theres one been on eBay a while for 5-6k as a converted track bike, converted as in it wasn't an ops but the motor iirc is plus larger airbag etc.

I reckon you'd need 3k to get back to road trim as you'd have to remove all the track bits and replace, inc shitty stuff like drilled bolts, and can't imagine fairings are too easily sourced (and a new set were £1500 10 years ago!!)

  13. Is it mine yet? :)

  14. sure if you offer him 10k its is...instead of the 3k you probably offered :bomb::laughing:

  15. You are the one that touted £5-6K :)
I haven't offered anything as it isn't technically for sale yet :innocent:

  16. Where does the larger airbag fit? In the airbox? o_O

  17. Under the yokes, old school SPS. Does your demo not have that?:joy:

  19. Cool :eyes:

  20. I suppose I have, yes.

The next step will be a 'for sale' add then.
