998 injector removal

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by efcbluepete, Dec 30, 2012.

  1. Posted on the builds/projects section, but guess here is better.

trying to strip the 998 down to clean, check, paint, grease, etc and having a tough job getting the front injector to unclip from the base (approx 8 little plastic hooks that click in place to hold in position).

got rear one off no probs, but the front is being a nightmare, and the clips seem very fragile.

anybody any tips on what I may be missing or if there is a way to remove without damaging the clips?

    thanks in advance,

    pete

  2. when you say injector that is held in with one screw in to the top of the throttle trumpet.. do you mean the throttle body, (the black trumpet shaped bit?) as you rotate it a llitle to clear the spring clips and then it comes out upwards. It can get a little gummed in there perhaps a little wd40

  3. Cheers Andy.

the throttle body plastic trumpet thing. About to head off to crack on with it so will get photos up once I get there. Will give the wd a soak while I get the original monoposto unit back together.

  4. there are just two spring steel clips (mind your fingers on them they are sharp!)......

  5. It's easier to unclip (twist and lift) the whole throttle trumpet/injector assembly from each throttle body, disconnect the fuel line and work on them away from the bike. The plastic clips are pretty fragile and can break easily. Just unclip the connectors off the injectors and throttle sensor and leave wiring in airbox.

Pic 1 shows the tough bugger. Pic 2 shows the one I have got off easily.

Am I right to gather you mean the bottom half of the plastic body just turns and comes out?

    Thanks,

    Pete

  8. And found the mystery oil leak that Woods of Abergele left me (note the brown staining around the rearmost right hand top cover screw). A bit of cleaning out and strategic use of ptfe tape and a small o-ring is my first attempt at sealing it off for now.

  9. i would say say the head gasket is leaking mate, and for some time.

  10. That was a worry at the back of my mind that I have been in denial of, and just hoping it was a top end seal weeping. Has been weeping for a while.

I assume the pressure caused by the head gasket is pushing oil out the rubberised washers?

    S**T, B*****KS...!!!

edit: no sign of oil in water, loss of either oil or water (just the slight dribble down the back of V cylinder.

maybe dig out the compression tester next weekend.

cheers for the help, much appreciated.

  11. Those screws don't hold down the head. Just the valve cover. It's a common leaking point....... I always refit with a smear of threebond to the gasket and also to the underside of the six screws.

  12. Yeah, is my foremost thought, but couldn't find the gasket 'goo' in the old man's garage (in the back of my mind was the head gasket worry, though, given it had a full service including belts, shims, etc at Woods only last year, and probably less than a thousand easy miles since with no track days or similar, and it was weeping from not too long after, I am really disappointed in them). But is there an underlying cause?

Figured the headbolts are the M10 fellas that are accessible from cut outs in the side. Will compression test anyway while I have her stripped so far down. Might as well do plugs, fluids and filters while I am at it.

fettling is addictive, and now I have a list of sub-projects, but not enough time to crack them all...

  13. The gasket is not of a good design. It's very smooth where it seals against the head. Take the cover off and you'll see. Have a cloth ready as you'll get a little oil run from around the cam caps. Keep it off the belts ;)
1098 uses a similar gasket but that has ridges which seal much better. Doesn't fit the 998 tho.
The head is indeed held down by the 4 M10's. I'd doubt very much you have a head gasket issue.
You can use regular silicone to seal the cover down if you can't lay your hands on a specific sealant.
