1200 Gps Power Cable Limit

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by reddy, Nov 21, 2017.

  1. Hey all,
I understand that the aux power cable for the gps that is hidden in the frame is limited to 10 amps. I read that this 10 amps is shared among the gps power cable, alarm and the 2 powerlet sockets. I'm not sure if there is anything else .
So is it ok if i were to have 2 fog light(3 amps each) plus a 2.1 amp usb charger switched at the same time without using any of the 2 powerlet aux sockets under the pillion seat. 8.1 amps in total.
I'm prepping the bike up for a long trip early next yr and last thing i want is an electrical meltdown. :p

    Cheers

  2. Probably worth buying a relay and simply using the connector they give, as a trigger. You can then run a couple from the connector and a couple from the battery.

  3. Your figures are not correct. The usb is rated at 2.1amps. This is at 5v At 12v that outlet will only draw 875 Mw or 0.875 amp.

  4. Steve, I understand what you've done using ohms law, but your figures do not take into account resistance, simply dividing voltage and current isn't the correct way to calculate surely?

  5. Eyup wayne. Guess what i did for a living. Right when doing this calculation the best way is to convert the figures to watts. Watts are a constant. 2.1A @5V = 10.5 Watts. So 10.5 watts @ 12V = 875 mA Not just ohms law. I = P over V. P being watts. I.E car headlight bulb 12V 55W = 4.583 A. How you doin fella not spoke for a while. Still buzzing from NEC yesterday. Need more money & a bigger garage.

  6. VIR. PVI triangles..... Guess what I used to do...lol, all good Steve..... You ?

  7. Great mate. Built a 911 turbo replica many years ago & played with bikes cars etc all my adult life. Wait for it, But my son has a 55 plate golf GTI 2.0 petrol. Recently had it chipped to 270. Great car but now his battery goes flat after a couple of days parked up. Taking 0.7 to 0.9 Amps with everything turned off, & can i find the problem. Its doing my head in. Reading threads on golf sites seems like a 1000 things could be wrong . I suspect the alarm but to disconnect it you have to take the drivers side front wing off. Of course my son thinks the Sun shines out of my arse, which does,nt help. By the way i was a Electrical engineer sparky Panel designer etc , but now retired & trying to enjoy doing as little as possible.

  8. What the hell are you two talking about :worried:

You lost me after Watts are a constant

  9. Sorry we got a bit carried away. Has no-one told you that you have to be mad to own a Ducati.

  10. Ahh, just re-read the OP, it's the 10 amp quote that confused me a little. 2.1 amps from a 5V USB is correct is it not ? The USB fitted to the Ducati won't be 12V Steve ? It's a 5V step down converter ?? (These 5V USB's are usually about 3amp 15w rated)

  11. Thats the point i was making. The device gives out Max 2.1A @5Volts. @ Max output it will only draw 875 mA from the 12v source. The thread suggested that he would need 2.1A from his dedicated 10A available. Which is not correct.

  13. From which 12V source ??

  14. I have no idea. Read the starter & he asks about the 10A supply hidden in the frame. Then adds everything together for a total.

  15. Sorry for the confusion, my knowledge in electrical is that bad.

The supplied GPS power supply hidden in the left side frame is rated at 12v with 10amp fuse yeah?

The usb charger is rated as such.
    • Input voltage: 12V-24V
    • USB (output) voltage: 5V ± 0.25V (USBx2)
    • Output Current: 2.1A
My bad that I previously calculated the output as 12v instead of 5v.

The fog lights is rated at 12v 36w each, which I assume to draw 3 amps for one light.
Am I safe to use all of them at the same time without blowing the 10amp fuse (which is what I read the fuse is rated at)
Thanks for clearing this mess in my head.

  16. Hi. The out put from the usb sockets are rated at 2.1a max. If you are charging a phone for example. The phone dead flat battery may take 2.1a but not for long. Usually the phone draw is less as the battery charges. If phone is charged it may only draw a few milliamps to keep topped up. So you should be ok.
