Troy Bayliss - Comeback At 48

Discussion in 'Racing & Bike Sport' started by Topolino, Dec 13, 2017.

  1. At 48 years old you'd have thought he'd have had his fill of broken bones and potential injuries and the very real prospect of extended recovery times and complications as you age, should you have an off. Saying that you have to admire his steely determination and drive, given that he's not financially motivated to step back into the arena. Saw him at WDW2016 on track, and also witnessed this little mishap

but he's a top bloke so I can only wish him well. Here's the link to the 2018 article.

  2. Top bloke!

Trivia: Some bloke came past me on some UK track in the early/mid 1990s, couldn't believe what I was seeing as he had both wheels sliding and was still giving it gas. Back in the pits I went to talk to said bloke - turned out his name was Troy Bayliss had never heard of him before. Fast as fk and he's stayed addicted to bikes, top man indeed!

  3. Always like to refer to the following account of "how to grow some", when looking at footballing pre-madonnas writhing around on the grass after stubbing one of their ickle toes. Get over yourselves and your bloated self-importance and take a leaf out of this man's dealings with real injuries.

Leading race one at Donington, coming out of Coppice at over 100mph, his Ducati slewed sideways and spat him unceremoniously onto the tarmac.

The next shot, of Troy in the gravel clutching his nuts, left no doubt as to what had broken his fall. Ouch. Then when a kid in the crowd asked for his gloves and Troy began to oblige (ignoring the excrutiating pain from what turned out to be a split testicle) he realised the full extent of his injuries as his mangled little finger began to come off with the glove it had been in. Double ouch. That evening surgeons removed the remains of Troy's finger. The testicle damage was so severe surgery was needed. "I've finished using it," he joked later.

Ten days later at Valencia, minus half a finger, and with a testicle so sore the team tried to buy him a cricket box before practice (they failed - no one plays cricket in Spain), Troy stuck his Ducati on pole.

  5. Troy could have consulted this guy:

  6. Wasn’t it Bayliss who was ignored (or something) for a MotoGP job but then joined the final round that year in Jerez(?) and won it?

  7. Not sure I could bring myself to Google for such things.

  8. Not at all - he had won that year's WSBK championship and was offered to ride the final MotoGP race of year (as the SBK season had finished) as a kind of "thank you and see how you get on, just have fun" kind of thing.

  9. I think it was Valencia after hed just won wsb title

  10. Well my smug level would have been turned up to 11 if it was me.

  11. Valencia 2006 when Rossi fell off gifting the championship to Nicky Hayden. Bayliss came first, a country mile ahead of the established GP stars. Andy

  12. It was a fitting end to a season that saw Capirex win on the Ducati in Japan on Honda's own circuit :upyeah:

And yeah, Hayden was very clever there and out-psyched Rossi by constantly saying "Rossi never cracks under pressure", it was an old trick but worked - Rossi was stressed to hell before the race and we all saw what how that turned out! :astonished:

  13. I was reading a reference to this "Australian amateur testicular surgeon" story in this week's Private Eye just at the same time that there was a post in this thread about Mr Bayliss's testicular injury. So I thought the juxtaposition might amuse somebody.
