1260 Demonstrator

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Pete1950, Dec 9, 2017.

  1. Today I have been told that Snells have got a 1260 Multistrada in, and it is available for demonstration rides. Presumably the other main dealers also have them now, or very soon will. Tempting, isn't it? But perhaps not on icy roads.

  2. At over 18k with some boxes on it, it's not tempting me at all Pete

  3. Jaybus Pete I've seen you on two different multi's in two-years. You got a collection or you just like changing to a newer model.

  4. They don't charge for demo rides - you can have a go for free.

  5. I didn't say I was going to buy one. At least not yet.

  6. Nah, not really interested to be honest, was expecting more than Ducati have delivered.

  7. So has anyone got a test ride in yet ?

  8. In the snow and ice? Unlikely.

  10. Pete, what snow and ice ?

P&H now have their demonstrator, but I was told it wont be PDI'd for a while so unlikely to be available for a ride before christmas.

  11. I've taken a look at the video and at some point he goes through the "Tire calibration" menu. Any idea what this is? Is it something in the current DVT's menu as well?
Also, the screen seems to have some horizontal streaks like those that you get when cleaning a sensitive screen with a hard cloth ...

  12. To answer you second questions first, there is no "Tyre Calibration" option in the current 1200 setup menu.

After a bit of Googling, i think it may refer to an indirect tyre pressure monitoring system (iTPMS) which "do not use physical pressure sensors but measure air pressures by monitoring individual wheel rotational speeds and other signals available outside of the tire itself. First generation iTPMS systems are based on the principle that under-inflated tires have a slightly smaller diameter (and hence higher angular velocity) than a correctly inflated one. These differences are measurable through the wheel speed sensors of ABS/ESC systems" (extract from Wikipedia page for Tire-pressure monitoring systems). Apparently this type of TPMS is type-approved and widely used in many makes of cars, including VW. Obviously, iTPMS provides only warnings of changes in tyre pressure not the absolute tyre pressures. The main benefit of an iTPMS is that no additional sensors are required, just another few thousand lines of code in the ABS ECU, which eliminates potential problems with pressure sensors when changing wheels/tyres. iTPMS need to calibrated after manually setting the tyres to the correct pressures, so they can learn reference parameters over the next 20 to 60 minutes of driving.

If an indirect TPMS has been implemented on the Multistrada 1260, I'm surprised Ducati aren't shouting about it.

  13. This post shows how the exact pressures are displayed on the dash (which can of course be just an estimate calculated by the iTPMS). I guess we'll need to wait for somebody who tries the bike (or for the manuals to be made available online).

  14. Good spot. Maybe someone can get a peak at the owner's manual of a demonstrator as it could be while before the're available online.

  15. Well, question answered. TPMS is there but it's optional. Hence the absence of hype about it (IMHO). What were they thinking?

  17. I wonder how strong the price for that will be

  18. Having read the Overdrive "1260 first ride" review, it appears that the tyre calibration has nothing to do with tyre pressures; "And in the menus a new tyre calibration menu that makes you ride at a preset speed in first gear so that the electronics can work out how to function best if you change to a new tyre or change tyre profiles or section."

Also the writer says "Ducati will add a new Tyre Pressure Monitoring System to the accessories list".
