Hi all, So as the title says really - is it worth me putting a lightweight flywheel on my 748E? And not a billet one, but rather an OEM one that has been turned down? As far as I can tell the pros are: quicker engine spin up, more(?) engine braking, quicker turn in And cons: cost for the work (I normally do all work myself but I don't have a tool for holding the alternator or a torque wrench big enough for the alternator nut), rougher idle, bad for the street I do all of my riding on the street (no track days), so is it worth putting a lighter flywheel in or a waste of money!? Cheers, Sam
i had mine replaced last year & made a big difference, bit of a pig around town but get it out in the open and acceleration is wild, but even saying that it was a pig around town before I had it replaced. would I get it done again???? probably no, a big waste of money
Fitted a lighter 600SS flywheel to my 900SS carby - mainly for the 32deg timing change so I could fit hi-comps, but the 1.2kg rotating mass lost of the engine made the bike handle quicker too! Bizarre... Heres the writeup I made, never looked back. Lighter flywheel(600SS) on a 900SS - Ducati.ms - The Ultimate Ducati Forum
I fitted an MPL lightweight flywheel to my 916 - the MPL is the same dimensions as the original but aluminium instead of steel so is considerably lighter. It does pick up a little quicker but overall not a huge difference although the couple of kg lost is always worth it. If the 748 is an early, single phase, model you can completely remove the flywheel weight as it's only there as a weight with no pickups on it - this is a free mod! and easily reversible if you don't like it.
