Hi, can anyone offer any suggestions please. I thought I would save a few quid and have ago at servicing my 999 track bike. Wish I hadn't bothered now. It appears to that the oil filter has been over tightened? I have used a spanner and rounded off the nut and tried using one of the rubber strap wrench thingys which snapped. Any help on how to move the bloody thing would be great. Ta
Buy yourself a good quality strap wrench and try again, patience is the name of the game, if all else fails it's the screwdriver through the filter or large waterpump pliers just to start the turn. don't forget to oil the seal on the new filter, this will facilitate removal next time
One of these for your bike, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/8-sided-O...90?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item27cce3bc52 Or the screw driver through the old one can work.
If it's a K&N filter nut you are talking about, you can cross drill the nut 6mm and stick a screwdriver through, or simply tap a 12 segment socket onto it.... If you have to use the screwdriver through the filter method and it tears apart, there is a trick with a pair of needle nose pliers and a ring spanner.....but that involves being bl**dy careful as the pliers have to go up inside the filter housing to be able to trun it at the top. Barmby, Nelson. Thank you. I've had a cuppa and let the blood pressure settle now. Time for another go. Now.... Where did I leave the chisel and sledge? Note to self - there is a very good reason why you have never serviced a bike before, you carnt bloody do it!
Cheers Arquebus, you are very much right, it is a k&n currently fitted. I did notice that it has a small whole through the nut for what I assume would be lock wire? It did cross my mind doing what you suggest with a screw driver but thought I would mess it up even more. It seems like the best thing to do now. Hope it works, your second suggestion sounds far beyond my skill set and hammers ability. Thanks again.
Nelson, Just had a closer look at that tool. The problem I have is that the filter which is currently stuck is smooth all the way round. It does not have the 8 sides for the wrench tool to sit in. However, I've just bought one for the future. Thanks again buddy.
Yep it is for lockwiring......use a good screwdriver otherwise it will bend of course......... If you have to go digging about with pliers, it will become apparent what you have to do when you look up the inside......stick the plier noses into opposing holes you see in the 'lid' of the filter, and hook a ring spanner over one of the plier legs, then lever the spanner against the other leg in anti-clockwise direction.... PS....wear some tough gloves, just in case something slips. AL
You could try fitting a jubilee clip around the filter as tight as poss, then use a screwdriver/blunt chisel against the screw part of the clip.Smack it with a hammer and if youre lucky itwill loosen.Good luck!!!
Finally done it. What a pain in the arse. Opted for the screw driver through the filter case in the end. Only just managed it though, so tight. Anyway, thanks all for your help, very much appreciated.
Ah.......desperation strikes again...................at least it is off without any more swearing. AL
nasty pasty you probably already know this, but do smear the new filters rubber sealing gasket with oil ( both sides) before refitting. I fill the new filter with as much fresh oil as possible as well to help things along.
google the Britool Strap Filter Wrench - 117117 something like that number. Faultless piece of kit. NEVER fails to succeed.
