916 Charging Issues

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by 224stu, Jan 16, 2018.

  1. Hi,,, early 916 app 4000 Miles,,, been stood a good while and used very occasionally,, the ignition light is staying on when engine runs,, occasionally dims , any body any idea’s alternator or rectifier ?? The batter holds a steady 12.3 volts and when running on tick over its kicking out about 11.7 and rise’s to 11,9 when revved
    Thanks for reading

  2. Regulator is the quickest and cheapest to change to see if that is the problem.

  3. [QUOTE="Bob T,
    Ok cheers bob

  4. Definitely not charging, as bob says it's most likely the reg/rec, there are checks you can do to diagnose.

  5. Cheers Steve.. any ideas on what the checks involve ??

  6. Start by taking off the battery and battery box and inspecting the plug on the yellow wires, pretty sure yours will have burnt connector(s). You need to measure the AC voltage on the two wires coming off the generator with the reg rec disconnected and the engine running, you should get around 35vAC at 1500 rpm, 70Vac at 3000 rpm and 140Vac at 6000rpm. If that is working the checks on the reg rec are just to confirm its health by measuring various resistances. If the yellow wires and plug are good and the ac output from the generator is good then the reg/rec is almost certainly fecked.

Also you may want to charge the battery and leave it for a while preferably indoors to see how fast the voltage is decaying. If it charges to 12.6 and holds that for few days at room temp the battery is probably useable. If it decays more than 0.2v overnight its time to get a new one as it is getting tired.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1

  7. Reg plugs are common too. The terminals burn out.

  8. I was hoping Denzil would notice this, he explains it much better than me.

  9. [QUOTE="Denzil the
All the connections are in good health and iv fitted a new battery which Iv had a month or so and holding its own,, did notice the 2 yellow wires were getting hot , il put my multi metre on the yellows and see what I get ,, thanks

  10. Thanks

  11. Stu, also check the reg rec for heat and how quickly it heats up, dodgy ones can get really hot really quickly.

  12. [QUOTE="Denzil it did heat up pretty quick TBF, Iv got 2 other regs but bloody different,, I’m looking on EBay mine start at £25 for a cheap Chinese 1. Might give it a go rather than app £100 to find out its some thing else, what’s your opinion??

  13. I would not buy a cheap Chinese one to see if the reg/rec is faulty unless once it shows it is faulty you immediately purchase a decent one.
I bought what I thought was a decent shindengen one from a German advertiser (race team) for my 1098 off E bay. They raced R1's. It was fried after 1000 miles turned out to be a cheap Chinese copy
My experience is that alternators are pretty reliable not heard of many going the symptoms you describe are most likely the reg so if I were you I would bite the bullet and buy an Electrex one. That's what I have on my 916SP

  14. But to counter the above statement as that is one persons experience in thousands.
I have fitted cheap ebay ones from China (less than £20 a time) to two bikes now and they have been working fine for over 2 years.

  15. I won't disagree with BobT.
Mine fried in Belgium on the way back to the ferry. Luckily there was enough juice in the battery to get me back to the ferry
As a result I carry a spare when I go on my continental jaunts along with relays and a Noco jump starter. I do have AArescue but for the sake of half an hour replacing it that's what I do.
To be fair reg failure does seem to be a common problem so genuine ones may not be much better than cheap Chinese copies
Buy 2 to be on the safe side still half the price of an Electrex one
