1200 Heated Grips

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Tomo76, Jan 19, 2018.

  1. Hi,
I'm looking for a set of heated grips for my 10 reg 1200. I like the design of the datatool thermal integrated grips but they are discontinued. Anyone got something similar to recommend
    Cheers

  2. Same question! (just came on here to post the exact same - don't mean to hijack your thread but I've been looking at this for a while now).

My OEM heated grips have failed on the throttle side (it's a pin prick break in the element, which I've tried, unsuccessfully to solder). I've considered using a cheap "stick on" grip heater kit off eBay (as someone else on the forum has done with some success?), but thinking now that'll always be unsatisfactory, so am now thinking about a pair of aftermarket heated grips.
The ones I have found are R&G (about £38), KOSO (seem to be imported from Germany - about £52-£54), Daytona (imported from Germany, about £82), Oxford (£80). There are also loads of cheap generic ones at about £30. OEM are £200 so out of the question. I plan to reuse the existing wiring and controls and go with the "snip, solder and heat shrink" method to save time (tank has to be removed to get at the connectors). Bike is 2011.
Anyone got any views on the above please?
    Cheers

  3. What year is your model?

I may have one at home. PM me and I'll let you know tomorrow.

  4. Wouldn't bother with the R&G ones, crap quality. I had them on a 125 years back. they did the job for a while but never got that warm and the grips themselves were annoyingly large and fell to bits after a year.

Only after market heated grips I'd go for are the Oxford ones. A mate used them on his ER6 everyday and even they die eventually. I just don't think any heated grips last forever, the heated elements are too vulnerable.

Personally, I'd save and go for the OEM ones, they look so much tidier and the control units of 3rd party units are all fugly.

  5. Bought a set of Oxford Adventure grips, have yet to fit them. Too much choice out there so just went with what's fitted already. It might save a bit of time running wires around if the old ones fit the new connections etc

  6. Glad you got sorted, let us know how they perform when you've got them running.
    Cheers

  7. Fitted a set of the R&G ones to the Supersport a few months back and love the heat and the quality. If one should fail then they sell just one grip if needed.

  8. Heated grips on my old 2014 were rubbish. The 2017 I swapped to hasn’t got any fitted and I was looking at getting some but decided to go for heated gloves instead. OMG I wished I’d done this years ago they are fabulous and heat the whole hand and not just the palm.

  9. I would agree that heated gloves are better, but a pair of £40 R&G heated grips compared to the minimum £180 for heated gloves does not sit well with many of us who have very comfortable gloves that we tend to ride with.

  10. No point having very comfortable gloves if the hands are freezing tho. I didn’t pay £180 for mine, but it wasn’t far off. I agree it’s an expensive option, but buying Ducati grips that I know aren’t all that good anyway is more expensive. I was recommended to go the heated glove route by the Ducati salesman at the NEC bike show. They’re brilliant and if your hands are warm then the riding will be more enjoyable too :)

  11. I had both grips fail on my 2013 within a day of each other, researched aftermarket and didn’t like any of them except the data tool ones (discont), looked into heated gloves and then considered someone else’s point about early morning rides when it’s a bit chilly and you don’t want your heated gloves on/with you all day etc. I ride all year so not having anything wasn’t an option.

Ended up stumping up for the replacements - got a good deal on the labour and, now I have a warranty as well in case they fail again.
