Powder Coating Wheels

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by apuhtred, Feb 11, 2018.

  1. So I want to have the 959's wheels powder coated gold. Looking round forums I see that it is not quite that easy. You need to have the bearings removed? Not sure I would feel comfortable removing and re inserting so do you go to the dealer and get them to do the whole thing or what have people done. Anyone know if Motorapido would do this for me?

    Regards Steve

  2. First off, MR unfortunately do not offer a powder coating service but they would remove and refit bearings. On all the wheel powder coating I have had done, the bearings have been removed because of the baking temperature. The grease in the bearings melts. Steve Turner, http://tpcs-magnesium-refurbs.co.uk/, will remove and refit if requested as part of the whole job. I have used Steve on a number of occasions and he is highly regarded by folks on this forum. He also does a postal service but I enjoy the run down to Melksham just the other side of Devizes. There will be powder coaters closer to you but I have no experience of them which others might. Andy

  3. I can confirm Andy's post - Steve removed and refitted my bearings for me. Of course it's far more sensible to replace them as they're coming out anyway. I didn't think of that at the time - just took my wheels along. Steve did a brilliant job of my wheels and frame.

  4. What colour are your original wheels steve

  5. Cheers for this lads. Andy they are stock black and as I have had the panels wrapped in the old 1199 tri colour they won't really go I think. Only think because I have not got it back together again yet but black seems a bit dull.

  6. They might look alright, original Tric wheels are black. If you weren't so far away you could have tried out my gold wheels. I have my original 899 parts in the shed from before I converted to single side swing arm

  7. I had some wheels (and a frame) powder coated, bearings need to be removed as the grease contaminates the paint job plus, I would imagine the bearings wouldn't like the chemical strip/paint/heat process.

Don't refit bearings, they're not expensive, will probably get damaged in the removal process and don't last forever anyway so fit new.

  8. I’ve always used Trestans in Southampton for all my powder coating. Mega service. Get new bearings put in, not expensive as mentioned. Solent bearings are good.

  9. Andy looking at those pics of yours has decided me def going to go for gold.
Spence thanks for the info I will look at Trestans tomorrow. Found a place in Eastleigh but don't know what they are like.
I have found a mechanic who will take out bearings for me so just a choice between magnesium reforms and Trestans.
    Cheers all for the advice

  13. Why would you want your wheels powder coated when you can get them painted with a far better finish and lesss work or am I just being daft

  14. Paint will give you a far wider choice of colours. Powder coating is usually a more robust finish and although not in this case as the wheels are relatively new, powder coating can cover a multitude of sins that paint doesn't. Bottom line is as always down to personal choice. Andy

  15. Mate, give Marcus a bell down at Silver Wheels in Ferndown, fairly sure he can help out as he has specialist aluminium paint just for wheels. I've used him a fair bit, always a great finish and price.

  16. Wayne just given Silver wheels a ring. Not much difference in price and they still need to strip disks and bearings so not sure which way to jump now. They are both going to come back to me with the extra for the same colour as Andys wheels.

  17. Very true one thing about powder coating you can’t touch up like you can with paint and to striping the wheels of a a 959 it’s a right Pain with the cush drive/bearing

  18. Fair point. All my bikes have a sssa and Carole's little NC29 rear wheel cush drives are a loose fit so I've never had to think that far ahead. Andy

  19. Decided to go with Spence's suggestion and go with Trestan. They have got the same colour as Andy had and only asked for a £20 donation as they had to buy £200 worth of paint. If anyone else interested they have the right colour in stock now. Thanks to everyone for the help in doing this will post some pics when it is all back together. Roll on some good weather.

    Regards Steve

  20. Nice work, look forward to some pictures :upyeah:
