New 848 Evo Owner

Discussion in 'Newbies Hangout' started by Ed848evo, Feb 23, 2018.

  1. Good morning all,

I just wanted to introduce myself as I am new to the forum, I'm from sunny Watford in Hertfordshire and have just recently placed a deposit down on an 848 EVO which I will shortly take collection of. I've always been a huge fan of Ducati's and the 848 has been a dream bike of mine for a while (being 6'6 it's the only bike that is big enough for me!).

I have a couple of questions which would be great to get some advice on - The tank has two small but noticeable outward dents (see picts). I didn't notice this when paying a deposit and don't want to cause an issue as the bike is extremely clean and only has 4,000 miles on the clock, is this easy to repair or would I have to replace the tank? The other is that it has the standard exhausts, is it worth spending the money and upgrading to Termignoni exhausts?

Thanks in advance for your advice and help.

    Ed

  2. Welcome.

I'm just up the road in Berko.

No idea on the dent's but the Termi's are a no brainer. But ideally you should get a map to go with it. If you intend to hit the track you'll need baffles in the UK.

  3. Thanks! Ideally I want to get the exhausts replaced, however the dealer has quoted £1,500 for just the cans (that incs fitting, mapping etc) which I thought was big money.

  4. Welcome 848 Evo dude. :) :upyeah:

The high spots in your tank could be the dreaded Ethanol issue. I've had 2 tanks replaced on my Streetfighter, and the 1st one did exactly the same thing as yours, with amongst other things, high spots on the upper face of the tank. :(

  6. Hi I could not stretch my finances to termis so went with Pipe Werx as show. Highly recommended

  7. Get used ones.

A proper map will be £300-£400 odd though.

  8. I got told this by a paint specialist who I queried it with but the garage (who are a Ducati dealer) have said that the tank is fine and has no issues ...

  9. Looks great!! Having a search around at the moment

  10. Lol, hello!

  11. Well, they would say that. :( If the bike is under warranty, I'd push it as it's a very well known issue.

  12. Mmmm :eyes: an outwards swelling you say? Is is a paint blister or is it firm underneath?

  13. I appreciate the advice, the bike comes with 3 months warranty. Would you push prior to taking delivery or before hand? I'm assuming the warranty would cover something like this not just mechanical?

  14. Mine did exactly the same Stu, I initially thought it was something I hadn't noticed when new and was going to flatten / polish it out. It was only when I did my homework that I came upon the ethanol issue. As it happens, the tank had swelled all over and the key guard couldn't be refitted after removing it. The 2 high spots were the only real visual indication of an issue.

The 2nd tank on the Streetfighter swelled in a totally different way.

  15. Tell them to fix it before delivery. Once they try to rectify it, they might find it a bigger issue than they thought as I don't think you could flatten and polish it out (mine couldn't have been, anyway)

  16. Welcome Dave

  17. I can only imagine your diagnosis is correct unfortunately :(

  18. Gut feel is that the tank is non-salvageable if it's ethanol damage. Look at some ethanol stabiliser if you are going to leave the bike sat for long periods with fuel in, and it might just stop it getting worse.

Ref the pipes, apart from the sound, the big advantage is the option to custom map the bike, I had mine done and it wasn't cheap at £300 but it turned off the lambda sensor leaning and put a 'static' map on which radically improved the bikes manners and made it much more rideable, it also made it more direct which could at times be a little sketchy but it was overall much improved. I too went with a cheaper exhaust option because I got some new Titanium Arrows for £475 when the used Termi's were still commanding more than that.

TBH though even though the above is great to do, it would all come behind a 14t front sprocket, a better seat, a oberon clutch slave cylinder, all of which I think are essential mods for an 848 being used on the road.

  19. Hi Phil, thank you very much for the advice it is much appreciated! I think re the exhausts, it's more the "look/sound" that I love and growing up watching Carl Fogarty and so on I automatically wanted to go with the Termi's but I think the cheaper option makes sense rather then paying a premium for the name.

  20. Chris on here mapped my 848 EVO for the termi slip ons, he also disabled the lamda sensors and disabled the exhaust servo. Rides a treat now! Also cost far far less than the £3/400 mark ;) I just posted it to him, and he posted it back.
